Amber and Ambergris
Amber is a warm fragrance accord created with materials such as resins and vanilla; ambergris is a natural fragrance material originating from sperm whales.
Neroli and Orange Blossom
Both come from bitter orange flowers: distillation produces neroli essential oil, while solvent extraction produces orange blossom absolute.
Iris, Orris and Ionones
Orris is a fragrance material obtained from iris rhizomes. Its origins differ from those of the ionones, a group of molecules whose scents recall violets or iris.
Incense and Frankincense
Frankincense and olibanum are names for the same resin. Incense refers to fragrant materials burned for their scent, which may include frankincense, or to an evocation of that scent.
