Clary sage is an herb in the mint family, also known in Japanese as oni-salvia. Its sensual scent has an animalic amber character, green astringency, freshness, and gentle sweetness.
Sclareol, which is abundant in clary sage, is also a fragrance raw material commonly used to produce Ambroxan (in Japanese).
What Does It Smell Like in Perfume?
Clary sage is available as an essential oil distilled from the stems and flowers and as a solvent-extracted absolute. Centered on a warm aromatic character, the essential oil has a background reminiscent of lavender, tea, hay, and ambergris, adding bright herbal qualities and gentle depth to perfume. The absolute has a denser character, layering lasting tobacco depth over amber and lavender-like florals. Perfumers use these differences in extraction to shape a fragrance’s contours, from light aromatic styles to rich amber compositions.
