Thyme

タイム

Native to southern Europe, thyme is a plant in the mint family. It produces white, pink, or pale purplish-pink flowers. The scent extracted from its dried flowering branches is spicy and aromatic, with a surprisingly leathery character as well. In the language of flowers, it means “I will never forget you.”

What Does It Smell Like in Perfume?

In perfume, thyme adds a sharp herbal character and a dry, phenol-like pungency, giving aromatic compositions a strong outline. Thyme red oil is a natural essential oil steam-distilled from the flowering parts of Thymus zygis and is distinguished by its intense herbal character. “Thyme” encompasses several species and chemotypes; the proportions of thymol, carvacrol, linalool, and other components differ even between Thymus zygis and T. vulgaris. The intensity of its herbal, peppery, and smoky impressions therefore varies according to the species and chemotype.
