Cypress

サイプレス

Cypress belongs to the cypress family and is known in Japanese as itosugi or seiyō-hinoki. It is often used in gardens. It also appears in paintings, with Van Gogh’s work being particularly well known.

Its scent is mellow and leathery, with a slight smokiness. It is used especially in men’s fragrances, conveying a masculine sensuality.

What Does It Smell Like in Perfume?

Cypress essential oil is a natural fragrance material obtained by distilling the leafy branches of Cupressus sempervirens. Pine-needle-like greenness is layered with pepper, dry wood, and resinous warmth, and its coniferous character lingers. It contains multiple constituents, including α-pinene, δ-3-carene, and cedrol, and gives perfume both a sharp green outline and quiet woody depth. Its characteristic effect is to create a forest-like freshness while grounding the composition with resinous richness.
