Her Majesty: Armor of Seduction Born from Cherry Blossoms

“A perfume must, first and foremost, be a wonderful story. Only then can it become a beautiful olfactory harmony.”
— Kilian Hennessy (founder of KILIAN PARIS)

An Encounter on the Philosopher’s Path

On February 4, 2026, KILIAN PARIS released Her Majesty. What gives this eau de parfum special significance is that it is the brand’s first venture into the chypre (in Japanese) fragrance family since its founding in 2007.

Chypre is a fragrance type born in 1917. It begins with intense citrus notes, particularly bergamot (in Japanese), followed by floral absolutes such as jasmine (in Japanese), rose (in Japanese), and ylang-ylang. Finally comes the most important element: the sweet, deep, woody scent of labdanum (in Japanese). It is elegant and refined, if a little old-fashioned.
Her Majesty is a modern reinterpretation of this classical structure.

The inspiration came from Kyoto, Japan, which founder Kilian Hennessy (in Japanese) visited several years earlier. While walking along the Philosopher’s Path, Hennessy was captivated by the sight of cherry-blossom petals carried on the breeze, swirling and falling like snow. Back in the atelier, Hennessy sought to translate the scene into fragrance by contrasting the two emotions it held: grace and power.

“Her Majesty emerges as an invisible armor made of grace and power.”
— From the official website

This concept of “invisible armor” also resonates with the philosophy Hennessy has nurtured since founding the brand. Hennessy has regarded perfume as “a weapon of seduction and, at the same time, symbolic armor that protects us from the outside world.” The cherry tree’s fleeting beauty, together with the strength with which it blooms each year in an overwhelming display, could be said to embody this “armor” in the natural world.

I suspect that this reverence for cherry blossoms is reflected directly in the perfume’s name, Her Majesty, a title for a queen.

Her Majesty belongs to The Narcotics, one of KILIAN PARIS’s five olfactory families.

Following the established design, the bottle is covered in white lacquer, with the motif of Achilles’ shield sculpted in relief on both sides. The perfume’s name is engraved by hand on each mirror-finished gold plate, another detail shared across the collection.

The Perfumer: Caroline Dumur

The fragrance was composed by Caroline Dumur, based in Paris at IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances) (in Japanese).

Dumur grew up on the grandparents’ farm in northern France, where an environment filled with the smells of flowers, cheese, hay, and animals is said to have awakened an interest in scent. Both parents were editors, and the many books at home on the history of perfume and its raw materials are also said to have helped inspire the ambition to become a perfumer.

After earning a degree in chemistry, Dumur obtained a master’s degree at ISIPCA (in Japanese) and trained under Anne Flipo at IFF. Chloé’s Nomade Naturelle and Comme des Garçons (in Japanese)’ Chlorophyll Gardenia are also known as signature works by Dumur.

In Hennessy and Dumur’s collaboration, the materials were selected with clear intentions. The composition began with four core elements: ambrette seed for its soft texture, rose (in Japanese) for elegance, cedarwood for a structural backbone, and cypriol (in Japanese) plus oakmoss for depth. Over these were layered aquatic notes, inspired by the stream along the Philosopher’s Path, and peach, suggesting the fruity facet of cherry blossoms.

The Fragrance’s Structure and Development

StageNotesImpression
TopWhite peach, rum, aquatic notesA juicy, transparent opening: the pristine freshness of the stream and the sweetness of fruit
HeartDamask rose, ambrette seedAn elegant floral core: musky sensuality that melds with the warmth of the body
BasePapyrus, cedarwood, oakmoss, cypriolDeep, earthy woods that provide structure and longevity

A major feature of this perfume, I would say, is that it inherits the spirit of chypre going back to François Coty while adding rum and aquatic notes to create a bright modernity and a distinctly Kilian character, setting it apart from the weighty historical classics.
