“I realized that fragrance, which ought to be an artistic and intimate form of expression, was slowly dying. I had no choice but to create Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle as an antidote to the growing banality of our profession.”
── Frédéric Malle, from an interview with Nose Paris
Origins and Concept
What the Name “Contre-Jour” Means
In 2026, Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle announced the eagerly awaited new eau de parfum Contre-Jour. It went on sale in Europe on February 1, 2026, with a Japanese release scheduled for April 8 of the same year.
Contre-jour is French for “backlighting.” Widely used in photography, film, and painting, the term describes a technique in which the light comes from behind the subject, creating strong contrasts between light and dark that accentuate silhouettes and outlines. Although light plays the leading role, it is the shadow that brings the form into view. This paradoxical aesthetic embodies the world of this perfume.
Immortelle, a Wild Mediterranean Flower
According to the official website, at the heart of Contre-Jour’s inspiration is a wildflower of the Mediterranean coast: the everlasting flower, or immortelle (Helichrysum italicum).
The botanical name Helichrysum combines the Greek words for sun, helios, and gold, chrysos. Its bright yellow petals do not fade even when dried, earning it the French name immortelle, meaning “immortal” or “everlasting.” A perennial subshrub that takes root in dry, rocky ground, it grows to around 60 cm under the intense Mediterranean sun and bears dense clusters of small yellow flowers in summer.
“Contre-Jour is more than just a perfume: it is a presence, a fiercely free soul. Built in defiance of conventional patterns, this fragrance traces a dazzling yet elusive trail that refuses to be defined. It echoes the spirit of the Mediterranean wildflower known as the everlasting flower: a sunlit yellow bloom with remarkable longevity, and the dark, untamed depths of its scent.”

The Brand’s Essence: “The Art of Audacity” (L’Art de l’Audace)
Contre-Jour is presented as a fragrance embodying the concept at the heart of the brand: “The Art of Audacity” (L’Art de l’Audace). It is a work imbued with individuality and creative rebellion, bringing together the opposing poles of light and shadow, delicacy and strength.
Contre-Jour is built around three principal notes.
| Note | Material | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Top | Immortelle (everlasting flower) | Spicy, almond-like warmth. A high dose of immortelle absolute expresses a modern ambery nuance that goes beyond its conventional herbal character |
| Heart | Rose damascena (Damask rose absolute) | A dark, edgy presence. Officially also called “Punk Rose,” it is a dense rose that seems to embrace shadows and thorns |
| Base | Sandalwood | A creamy, warm woody note that envelops the composition and leaves a memorable trail on the skin |
The full ingredient list (INCI) on the official website confirms that, besides these three materials, the composition also includes patchouli oil, bergamot peel oil, geranium flower oil, rose flower oil, and other ingredients. Reviews published on YouTube have also reported a bittersweet fruitiness reminiscent of blackcurrant (cassis) and red berries, a peppery spiciness, and the presence of clean patchouli.
Its official olfactory family is “Aromatic Spicy,” and it is described as a unisex perfume intended for both women and men.
The Perfumer: Annick Ménardo
Career
Contre-Jour was composed by the celebrated French perfumer Annick Ménardo. Born in Cannes, Ménardo studied organic chemistry before training in perfumery at the French fragrance school ISIPCA (in Japanese), then honed the craft at Créations Aromatiques, now Symrise, under Michel Almairac (in Japanese).
In 1991, Ménardo moved to the major Swiss fragrance company Firmenich, creating numerous celebrated perfumes there over approximately 27 years. In 2018, Ménardo joined the German fragrance company Symrise and continues to work as a master perfumer.
Signature Works
Ménardo’s body of work is so extensive that it could almost stand for the history of modern perfume itself. The following are among the widely recognized signature creations.
- Lolita Lempicka (1997)
- Bvlgari Black (1998)
- Dior Hypnotic Poison (1998)
- Hugo Boss Boss Bottled (1998)
- YSL Body Kouros
- Dior Bois d’Argent (2004)
- Lancôme Hypnôse (2005)
- Le Labo Patchouli 24 (2006)
- Le Labo Gaiac 10 (2008)
The Fragrance Foundation UK describes Ménardo’s style as “precise, exacting, and slightly rebellious.”
A First Work for Frédéric Malle
Contre-Jour is Ménardo’s first fragrance for Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, and Frédéric Malle had named Ménardo in an earlier interview as someone with whom he wanted to create a perfume. The first fragrance for this brand from a perfumer who had produced signature creations for numerous houses over a long career attracted considerable attention among fragrance enthusiasts.
“I make perfumes as if I were writing music. I feel that a creation is complete when it surprises me: when the materials begin speaking to one another and I can hear their melody.”
── Annick Ménardo
The official website further describes Ménardo’s approach as building with “blocks of accords” developed throughout a career, presenting this as the key to giving the compositions depth and sophistication while keeping their structure legible. “Captivated by the allure of contradictions,” the official description concludes, Ménardo “creates fragrances of a new era for those who cherish their own mystery.”
Speculating About the New Malle
The Sale to Estée Lauder and Malle’s Departure
In November 2014, The Estée Lauder Companies announced the acquisition of Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle. Following Le Labo and Rodin olio lusso, this was its third acquisition in one month. According to reports, the purchase price was $12 million. The transaction closed in January 2015, and Malle remained with the brand as creative director.
In spring 2024, however, Malle announced that he would leave the brand he had led for 25 years at the end of June that year. In a statement, he said:
“Twenty-five years ago, I set to work to create a direct connection between some of the finest perfumers in the industry and its most demanding customers. I created a platform where perfumers could express themselves to the fullest and take such pride in their work that they would want to put their names to it.”

The First Step in the Post-Malle Era
Perfume critic Darius Halavi makes the following observation about Contre-Jour: “It is the first new Frédéric Malle fragrance since 2024, and the first perfume not created with Frédéric Malle himself.” Although Malle may have been involved in its development before leaving, the assumption is that another team completed it and brought it to market.
In this context, Contre-Jour can be seen as a work at a major turning point for the brand. Ironically, it was announced only after Malle had left, despite his having named its perfumer as the person with whom he most wanted to create a fragrance at the time. From a publishing house whose founding “editor-in-chief” has departed, this rebellious perfume named “backlighting” is the first page of a new chapter.
What Backlighting Might Mean
In dictionary terms, backlighting is “a technique in photography or painting in which the camera or paintbrush is directed toward the light source.” The technique brings an object’s silhouette into view and creates a contrast between light and shadow.
If I indulge in speculation, it is not impossible to see the release of this perfume itself as a suggestion of light and shadow.
The light is the continuing legacy of the Frédéric Malle brand, the perfumer who embraced it, and the fragrance born from that encounter.
The shadow, meanwhile, is the departure of the founder from a brand that was created as an antithesis to the industry and existed precisely because of the director named Frédéric Malle. For a brand that places such importance on Malle’s direction during the perfume-making process, his departure is the darkness fans fear most. I cannot help seeing it, too, as the darkness of having been acquired by a giant corporation, Estée Lauder.
Yet the denser and deeper the darkness, the brighter the light. Perhaps this is a message from Estée Lauder: even in these circumstances, the brand will not make market-led fragrances; the perfumer, promised complete freedom, will remain the protagonist; and the brand’s philosophy will be maintained even after Malle’s departure.
