Amandine Clerc Marie: Turning the World’s Colors and Shapes into Fragrance

Perfumery Career

Born to a mother who worked as a perfumer at Givaudan (in Japanese), Clerc Marie visited the laboratory from childhood and met perfumers and their assistants. The little bottles seemed like magical creations, leading Clerc Marie to decide at an early age to become a perfumer.

After studying medicine at university for two years, Clerc Marie decided to attend the perfumery school ISIPCA (in Japanese). While writing a final-examination thesis about the celebrated Hermès fragrance Bel Ami (1986, Jean-Louis Sieuzac (in Japanese)), specifically on modernizing its leather note (in Japanese), Clerc Marie met the future mentor (in Japanese) Michel Almairac (in Japanese).
After graduation, Clerc Marie joined Robertet (in Japanese) as an assistant and composed alongside Almairac for ten years or more, until joining Firmenich (in Japanese) in 2011. In 2008, Clerc Marie created the celebrated Chloé Eau de Parfum, which took two years to develop.

Adapting a perfume to contemporary tastes requires meticulous work. You must not go against the essence of its original olfactory character, yet you must not limit your imagination either; instead, you have to set it free.

Clerc Marie particularly enjoys visualizing what she wants to create, placing great importance on movement, color and form. In everyday life, too, she frequently moves house or changes the interiors. She also travels around the world with her husband and two sons, spending time discovering all sorts of things. This has a major influence on her fragrance creations.

Clerc Marie is currently active as a senior perfumer (in Japanese) at Firmenich.

What matters to me is seeing the world, because I can reflect everything I see in my creations.
