Philippine Courtière: A Passion for Fragrance Connecting Paris and the Middle East

Perfumery Career

Born on February 4, 1986, near the Champ de Mars park in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, France, Philippine Courtière grew up playing around the Eiffel Tower. Courtière’s grandfather, Jacques Rouët, served as the brand’s managing director from the very beginning, when Christian Dior founded it. (It was Rouët who recommended Saint Laurent as artistic director after Dior’s death.) Courtière’s father, Jean Courtiere, was chief executive of Givenchy (in Japanese), while mother Sophie Rouët Courtiere worked in fragrance development at Escada.

Jacques Rouët worked day and night for several months, single-handedly taking responsibility for the administration of the newly founded company as it grew rapidly.

Christian Dior

Courtière earned a bachelor’s degree in French and Spanish law at Paris Nanterre University, but could not resist the desire to create perfumes and decided to pursue a path in the perfume industry.

After internships at Takasago (in Japanese) in 2007 and Robertet (in Japanese) in 2008, probably training under Michel Almairac (in Japanese) during this period, Courtière entered Firmenich’s (in Japanese) perfumery school in 2009. Training included three years in Geneva, six months in New York with Honorine Blanc (in Japanese) as mentor (in Japanese), and a year and a half in Paris under the mentorship of Nathalie Lorson (in Japanese), Fabrice Pellegrin and Christophe Raynaud. In 2014, Courtière joined Firmenich’s Dubai office as a perfumer. After working at the Paris office from 2018, Courtière moved to Symrise’s (in Japanese) Dubai office as a senior perfumer in September 2021.

Someone in Firmenich’s marketing department suggested that I try working with Philippine Courtière. She, Philippine, is a wonderful person, and I am very happy working with her.

Philippine Courtière had also worked as an assistant to my friend Francis Kurkdjian (in Japanese), so we thought it would be good to create something with this young perfumer at Annick Goutal (in Japanese).
