Vanilla is a member of the orchid family native to places such as Mexico and Central America, and is also cultivated in Madagascar and Réunion. Its flowers are pollinated by hand. When harvested eight to nine months later, the vanilla still has green pods and does not yet have its characteristic scent, so it is dried for at least six months. Vanillin develops during this drying period.
The scent is warm, rounded, and sensual, becoming a powerful, aphrodisiac-like fragrance. It is also exceptionally good at improving a fragrance’s longevity.
What Does It Smell Like in Perfume?
Vanilla in perfume includes CO₂/SFE extracts of natural vanilla beans, as well as fragrance materials such as vanillin and ethyl vanillin. Natural extracts offer not only sweet powdery and balsamic notes, but also a complexity reminiscent of leather, phenols, wood, and spices, adding depth to the base. Vanillin-based materials build a strong, clearly defined vanilla sweetness. Choosing between the two allows a wide range of expressions, from the familiar appeal of confectionery to resinous, sensual depth.
