Those budget perfumes that everyone (?) encounters as a student. Who actually composes them? Those nostalgic scents turn out to have been created by hugely famous perfumers!
Samourai (Alain Delon, 1995)
Alain Delon, practically synonymous with the handsome leading man, starred in a 1967 film called Le Samouraï. Interestingly, it is said that at the time he had a samurai spear, a sword and a wakizashi short sword displayed in his bedroom.
According to information from the official Japanese retailer, the perfume was created with Toshirō Mifune, whom Alain Delon admired, as its inspiration. But how much truth is there to that? Perhaps there is little doubt that the film mentioned above and Japan inspired it, at least.
Samourai became hugely popular as soon as it arrived in Japan in 1997. Its composition was entrusted to the person who is now Hermès’s in-house perfumer (in Japanese), Christine Nagel.
Since the brand’s perfume debut in 1979, hugely famous perfumers including Mark Buxton and Maurice Roucel have also composed its fragrances.
Sculpture Homme (Nikos, 1995)
Nikos’s Sculpture Homme is a men’s fragrance staple that sold explosively in the 1990s because Kimutaku (Takuya Kimura) was said to wear it. Like Samourai, I imagine it served many of you well.
This popular perfume was created by Michel Almairac (in Japanese), Christine Nagel’s mentor.
Nikos takes its name from its founder, Nikos Apostolopoulos, and is a fashion brand established in Greece in 1985.
Green Tea (Elizabeth Arden, 1999)
When you think of a staple among tea fragrances and budget perfumes, it has to be Green Tea by Elizabeth Arden. Elizabeth Arden was a formidable rival to Helena Rubinstein, and the brand is said to have helped lay the foundations of the modern beauty industry in the 1930s and 1940s.
Green Tea, Elizabeth Arden’s best-selling perfume, was created by Francis Kurkdjian (in Japanese), who is now Christian Dior’s in-house perfumer.
Elizabeth Arden has released many perfumes since 1936, with hugely famous perfumers such as Edmond Roudnitska (in Japanese), Carlos Benaïm, Sophia Grojsman (in Japanese), Rodrigo Flores-Roux and Yann Vasnier among their creators.
Ghost (Ghost, 2000)
Ghost originally began as a fashion brand established in Britain in 1985. Ghost, released as the brand’s first perfume, was composed by Michel Almairac. It is not hugely popular in Japan, but it is one of those brands you always find in shops selling budget perfumes. There are also fragrances composed by Pierre Bourdon (in Japanese).
