Perfumery Career
Born around 1950 into an Armenian family in Constanța, Romania, Annie Buzantian moved to the United States in 1970 to broaden personal horizons and perspectives.
Previously unconnected with the world of fragrance, Buzantian first worked as a laboratory assistant at Universal Oil Products (now Givaudan (in Japanese)), where an opportunity arose to become a junior perfumer (in Japanese). Buzantian then trained under Elie Roger (in Japanese) and began a career as a perfumer at Firmenich (in Japanese) in 1972. In 1988, Buzantian was recognized as Firmenich’s first female Master Perfumer (in Japanese).
In 2003, Buzantian received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Perfumers, and in 2015 became the first woman to receive the Perfumer of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award from The Fragrance Foundation.
The wonderful thing about being a perfumer is that you can make someone’s dream come true. When we perfumers do this, we have to go somewhere no one has ever been before. It is rather like an expedition discovering unexplored territory.
