Elie Roger: Trusting Imagination and Developing a Scent of One’s Own

A Career in Perfumery

As perfumers, we must have a great deal of imagination. And sometimes we must be dreamers.

Elie Roger

In 1946, Roger began training as a perfumer in Grasse, France, the town of Roger’s birth. After joining Firmenich (in Japanese) in New York in 1971, Roger was recognized as a master perfumer (in Japanese) in 1978. Roger retired in 1991 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Perfumers in 2001.

Roger died in 2010.

Annie Buzantian (in Japanese) was Roger’s apprentice. Roger’s daughter, Odile Bongi, is also a perfumer.

If you have talent, you must find your own way and always make sure you are two steps ahead.

I do not want to influence you or have you become like me. I want you to become “you.” Find your own path.
