Labdanum

cistas

Known as cistus labdanum, cistus, or ciste, it is also called rockrose because of its relatives with rose-like flowers growing among rocks (it is not a member of the rose family). It grows around the Mediterranean and produces beautiful flowers resembling wild roses. Its growing regions become intensely hot in summer, so it secretes a strongly scented resin to protect itself from the harsh climate. This resin has a distinctive amber-like (Japanese article) scent that is animalic, soft, sweet, and sensual.

The essential oil has depth and a rich, boozy sweetness reminiscent of port wine or a well-aged, sweet single-malt whisky.

What Does It Smell Like in Perfume?

In perfume, labdanum is a natural fragrance material with warm amber, resin, smoke, leather, and subtly animalic shading. The resinoid obtained from the gum resin of Cistus ladanifer has a rich balsamic character and a lasting leathery note, giving a base depth and weight. It is an important support for chypre and amber fragrances, but is not itself an “amber accord” assembled from several fragrance materials. The resinoid and absolute also involve different extraction processes, resulting in differences in the texture of their scents.
