The Founder and the Origins of the Brand
A Hamburg Industrial Engineer Captivated by Italy
Rainer Diersche was born in Hamburg, Germany. At university, he studied product engineering and industrial economics. Combining the grounding of an industrial engineer with a keen aesthetic sensibility, he became deeply drawn to interiors and architecture.
After graduating, Diersche ran two curated interior-design shops. It was during this period that he immersed himself in the world of Italian minimalism, which he describes as his “creative roots.”
“As someone who once owned two design shops, my creative roots lie unequivocally in Italian minimalism.”
— Rainer Diersche (from an interview with meinduft.de, 2023)
As Diersche explored interior and furniture design, his conviction grew that “a beautiful space needs a fragrance worthy of it.” His interest in scent dated back to childhood, and he has also described its convergence with his love of interior design and architecture as a “logical consequence.”
An Epiphany on Inhaca Island, Mozambique
The inspiration for the brand arrived suddenly during a walk along a beach on Inhaca Island in Mozambique, Africa. The official website recounts the episode in the founder’s own words.
“It suddenly came to mind while I was walking along the beach on Inhaca Island in Mozambique. As I devoted myself to the minimal Italian design of homes and furniture, the style I love, and immersed myself ever more deeply in it, it became part of my life. I think that pure design and my love of fragrance gave rise to LINARI as a logical consequence that was bound to happen.”
— Rainer Diersche (from the official LINARI website)
And so, in 2003, Diersche established LINARI GmbH in Hamburg. The brand takes its name from Linari, a small village in Tuscany, Italy, the wellspring of his design inspiration. The village’s name embodied the brand’s aesthetic itself.
The Strength of Entering as an “Outsider”
Rather than arriving as a fragrance-industry insider, Diersche entered the field as an industrial engineer and interior designer. He describes himself as a “Quereinsteiger,” someone entering from another field.
“As a so-called ‘outsider’ to the industry, I had a strong affinity for timeless, modern design even before founding the brand. Interior design and architecture in particular gave me a great deal of inspiration. Scent and smell had also fascinated me since childhood. These different influences led to my later affinity for the art of perfumery.”
— Rainer Diersche (from a Parfumo.de interview at Global Art of Perfumery 2012)
This perspective, unconstrained by industry conventions, would lead to his distinctive approach of creating room fragrances at eau de parfum quality.
From Room Fragrances to Perfumes for the Body
LINARI began as a specialist in room fragrances, or reed diffusers. In 2010, about seven years after its founding, it unveiled its first collection of eau de parfum fragrances.
“Even when LINARI was making only room fragrances, we were already using nothing but fine perfume. For years, many customers kept asking whether our room fragrances could also be made into perfumes for the body. Developing eau de parfum was a natural continuation of that.”
— Rainer Diersche (from an interview with meinduft.de)
Today, LINARI is represented in at least 50 countries and is known for a clientele that includes high-end hotels, celebrities, and royal families around the world. In July 2022, it opened the world’s first experiential flagship store combining “fragrance,” “design,” and “music” in Omotesando, Tokyo.
What Defines the Brand
A Philosophy of “Sympathy Between Fragrance and Design”
LINARI’s philosophy can be summed up as “Symbiosis between seductive fragrance and pure design,” the coexistence of fragrance and design. Diersche believes a brand can be “authentic” (“authentisch”) only when its fragrance, bottle design, and packaging are in harmony.
“I believe that, for a perfume brand to be authentic, there must be harmony between its fragrance, flacon, and packaging. LINARI is a timeless, modern brand, and only fragrances that suit those attributes belong in it.”
— Rainer Diersche (from an interview with meinduft.de)
Diersche also sees fragrance as “an invisible building material for a space.” The idea that an invisible scent can shape our perception of a space as much as sight or sound is also described in lighting manufacturer ERCO’s account of the Villa Linari project in Hamburg.
Room-Fragrance Bottle Design
The room-fragrance bottles use high-quality Italian glass. Its color, shape, and finish differ from line to line, while the lids feature materials such as wenge, a prized African wood, maple wood, and aluminum. The diffuser reeds are made from natural rattan, and their visual relationship with the bottle is also built into the design.
Particularly notable is that the contents of every room-fragrance line are made not with “fragrance specifically for room diffusers,” but with fragrance oils of actual eau de parfum quality.
“LINARI is the only [room-fragrance] manufacturer to use eau de parfum in its room diffusers as well. This explains the high fragrance quality and longevity.”
— Rainer Diersche (from an interview with meinduft.de)
Eau de Parfum Bottle Design
The eau de parfum flacons use French glass designed by Diersche himself. Their unusual shape is “an extremely low disc with a very large diameter,” decorated with three jet-black bands alternating with slender rings plated in 22-carat gold. The solid African wenge-wood cap is designed to double as a stand for the bottle.
Working with Perfumers
Both the room fragrances and the eaux de parfum are created through close, direct collaboration with internationally acclaimed perfumers. Diersche begins with a concept for “what the fragrance should express,” then approaches the perfumer best suited to that theme.
“I try to give perfumers requirements that are as specific as possible. The more clearly the desired fragrance is communicated, the more precisely the perfumer can realize it. Once the starting point is set, there is room for olfactory creativity. It normally takes 12 to 18 months from idea to finished product. Some projects have taken several years.”
— Rainer Diersche (from an interview with meinduft.de)
Diersche also works with leading perfumers in Paris and New York, commissioning original formulas for the room fragrances as well.
The Fragrance Lineup
Room Fragrances (Reed Diffusers)
LINARI’s room-fragrance collection is organized into design lines, each offering several scents. The principal lines are as follows.
- Translucent Line: The line that marked the collection’s beginnings. Clear glass with a simple maple-wood cap. Three fragrances: AVORIO, RUBINO, and SCURO.
- Graphic Line: A modern design in which jet-black abstract graphics wrap around cylindrical glass. Three fragrances: ONDA, SASSO, and EBANO.
- Rombi Line: A geometric design pairing rounded bottles with a diamond pattern. Three fragrances: AGATA, ICONA, and FIORE.
- Cristallo Line: A collector-oriented line adorned with Swarovski Elements crystals. It can be paired with any fragrance.
- Velvet Line: A luxury line with glass coated in fine velvet, offering refinement to both touch and sight. Six fragrances in total, including AMARENA and PURO.
- Grandezza Superiore, 3,000 ml, and Grandezza Imperiale, 5,000 ml: Large diffusers for hotels and public spaces. The latter is said to be the largest reed diffuser currently commercially available on the home-fragrance market.
- Travel Line, 250 ml: A smaller series inspired by beautiful Italian cities and resort destinations. Three fragrances: AMALFI, CAPRI, and SIENA.
Many other lines are also offered, including the Mark Buxton Line, Chrome Shadow Line, Wave Line, Diamond Line, Ruby Line, Black Amethyst Line, Art Collection, and Christmas Edition.
Eaux de Parfum
Launched in 2010, the eau de parfum collection was created by three world-class perfumers, later joined by a fourth.
Mark Buxton (in Japanese) is a Paris-based perfumer who has worked on collections for Comme des Garçons (in Japanese) and Thorsten Biehl and also has his own brand. He created the following three fragrances for LINARI.
- Angelo Di Fiume: “Angel of the stream.” A gourmand composition in which the sweet-tart character of wild cherry and raspberry is layered with ylang-ylang and jasmine, caramel and milk.
- Notte Bianca: “A sleepless night.” A stimulating yet elegant fragrance that adds spice to the herbal, woody scent of absinthe, the forbidden liqueur.
- Porta Del Cielo: “Door to the blue sky.” It opens with Calabrian bergamot and fruits before moving into floral and woody notes, leaving a deep trail of Siam benzoin and labdanum.
Maurice Roucel (in Japanese) is a master perfumer in Paris behind many celebrated fragrances, including Hermès 24 Faubourg, Guerlain L’Instant, and Gucci Envy. His LINARI work includes the following.
- Acqua Santa: “Holy water.” A clear, pure fragrance intertwining blackcurrant, rose, and jasmine with musk. It was released as Linari’s fifth fragrance, composed by Roucel.
Egon Oelkers is a perfumer with at least 40 years of experience in New York, Paris, Geneva, and Hamburg who also helps train the next generation. He created the following fragrances for LINARI.
- Eleganza Luminosa: An elegant floral bouquet of rose, jasmine, and iris.
- Vista Sul Mare: “A scene over the sea.” A bergamot-and-citrus opening leads into a heart of rose, lily of the valley, and carnation, followed by a powerful drydown tinged with musk and patchouli.
Jérôme di Marino is also among the participating perfumers, broadening the collection’s range.
By the Way…
- The revival of CIRO Parfums: Diersche’s passion for fragrance did not end with LINARI. The legendary fragrance brand CIRO (in Japanese), born in 1920s New York and established by Jacob Wiedhopf, founder of the industry organization the Fragrance Foundation, had lain dormant since the 1960s. Diersche acquired its trademark rights and revived CIRO in April 2018. Retaining the historic fragrance names, he brought out a collection of compositions reinterpreted by contemporary perfumers, presented in bottles combining Art Deco with modern design.
- A residence called Villa Linari: Diersche has built his own home in Hamburg, known as Villa Linari. The 520-square-meter residence incorporates a system that distributes fragrance throughout the interior through its ventilation system. It also serves as an experimental setting for multisensory architecture, with architecture, lighting, and fragrance designed as one.
