Once, I asked a French perfumer, “How is it that French people can create such wonderful fragrances?” The reply was simply, “C’est la tradition” (“Perhaps it’s tradition”).

Book Review
I was fortunate enough to study under various celebrated perfumers in Grasse and Paris. I met many perfumers during that time, and what I would say they all had in common was “an excellent memory.” They were also “very nice people.” I suppose people who achieve great things in all sorts of fields really are tremendously appealing as human beings, too.
Hitoshi Hiroyama
The author, Hiroyama, is chief perfumer at T. Hasegawa and studied the art of perfumery under the renowned Jean Carles and Francis Fabron. After joining T. Hasegawa in 1957, Hiroyama spent nearly 50 years in perfumery and has written extensively, from books to research findings.
This book discusses the plants and flowers used as fragrance materials, describing their scent characteristics, extraction methods, and chemical analysis alongside episodes from the author’s studies in France. The nuggets of knowledge drawn from experience are things you rarely get to hear, and the stories of exchanges with other perfumers are essential reading, too.
What does it mean to work in the perfume industry? What are fragrance materials like, in all their beauty and through the eyes of perfumers in the home of the craft? This is a book I recommend to anyone who wants to find out!
