Book Review

An unexpected debut book from perfumer Jacques Cavallier is here. It is very unusual for perfumers to publish books: there are only a handful, including Edmond Roudnitska (in Japanese), Jean-Paul Guerlain, Jean-Claude Ellena (in Japanese), Mathilde Laurent, and Dominique Ropion. Basically, the perfume industry does not want to reveal what goes on behind the scenes.

In this book, Cavallier apparently sets out to reveal how the flowers used in Cavallier’s perfumes are cultivated, how their fragrant materials are extracted, and how they are made into perfumes.

Lionel Pailles, who is listed alongside Cavallier as an author, is a journalist specializing in the perfume industry. In the past, Chanel invited Pailles to write a book about the fragrance materials, farmers, and extraction methods behind No. 5. Pailles also introduces perfumes on the well-known noseparis.
