God created scents, and human beings created perfumes. Defenseless and fragile, able to survive only through technology. Perfume is the combination of scent and human existence.

Book Review

Jean-Claude Ellena is great. That is because Ellena carries on the spirit of Edmond Roudnitska (in Japanese) and strives to pass this knowledge on to the next generation. This book is an attempt to map the plants and scent compositions used in the perfume industry. It is probably the first time in history that a single perfumer has published a book discussing fragrance ingredients.

The contents are mapped according to the parts from which ingredients are extracted: wood and bark, leaves, flowers, fruits, resins, seeds, and roots. Each fragrance ingredient is explained in terms of its history, how it is used in perfumes, and so on. The important point is that the author writes not simply about what each plant smells like, but about the differences when it is used in perfume, from the author’s own perspective.

Cinnamon is not widely used in the European perfume industry. However, it is used in the innovative Eau d’Hermès (1951), which Edmond Roudnitska created as Hermès’s first perfume. The inspiration for this perfume came from women’s inner desires, in other words, from things made of leather.
