Title: A Perfumer’s Notebook: Exploring the World of Scent
Author: Shoji Nakamura
Publication year: 2008
Publisher: Asahi Shimbun Publications
Book Review
The author worked as a perfumer at Shiseido for nearly 40 years and held roles including director of fragrance research at the Shiseido Research Center and chief perfumer. The specialist content, written from a wealth of knowledge and experience at a major company, offers much to learn. I think it is useful for perfumers in Japan, dealing with scent in general rather than perfume specifically.
The writing is not plain and straightforward: the content is specialized and long-winded, though certainly not difficult. For that reason, I would not recommend it as an introductory book, but I do recommend it to those considering a path into the perfume industry and intending to study chemistry. With its concrete examples, I think it will help you understand more of the world of scent.
