“If writing is the visible expression of the soul, then fragrance must be its unspoken, subconscious language. Fragrances tell stories, shape emotions and evoke poetry, as words written in invisible ink, just as a fountain pen inscribes them in black and white on paper.”
— Montblanc (from the brand profile published by The Perfume Society)

The Founders and the Origins of the Brand
The Dream of a “Non-Leaking Pen,” Born in Hamburg
Montblanc’s story begins far from perfume. In 1906, Hamburg banker Alfred Nehemias and Berlin engineer August Eberstein set out to manufacture writing instruments. Stationer Claus-Johannes Voss later joined them, and in 1908 the Simplo Filler Pen Co. GmbH was formally registered in Hamburg.
Their goal was simple yet revolutionary: to create a writing instrument that needed no inkwell and did not leak. Fountain pens at the time had a serious problem with ink seeping out while they were being carried, and the promise of “no leaks” lay at the heart of the early sales proposition.
The Rouge et Noir (“red and black”) series was launched in 1909, offering both reliability and refined design. Then, in 1910, a pen bearing the name Montblanc appeared. The company itself would not be renamed Montblanc until 1934. Taken from Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps, the name symbolized excellence and the pursuit of greater heights.
The White Star and the Birth of the Meisterstück
The “white star” emblem, which would become the brand’s trademark, was created in 1913. It is said to represent the snow covering the summit of Mont Blanc as seen from above. From then on, the emblem would continue to appear on the caps of Montblanc writing instruments, its perfume bottles and other products.
In 1924 came the Meisterstück, a fountain pen whose name means “masterpiece” in German. Used to sign historic documents and contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars, this pen has continued to be loved around the world as a symbol of the brand. From 1930, its nibs began to be engraved with “4810,” the height in metres attributed to Mont Blanc at the time.
Dunhill, Richemont and Global Expansion
In 1977, British luxury-goods company Alfred Dunhill Ltd. acquired a majority stake in Montblanc, making it a wholly owned subsidiary in 1985. This marked the discontinuation of lower-priced models and a greater focus on the luxury market. In 1993, Montblanc came under the Vendôme Luxury Group, controlled by Swiss luxury conglomerate Richemont; Vendôme was fully integrated into Richemont in 1998. One of the world’s leading luxury conglomerates, Richemont owns houses such as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Chloé. Under its umbrella, Montblanc accelerated its full-scale entry into new categories, including watches, jewellery and larger leather goods.
Entering Fragrance: The Turning Point of 2001
Montblanc, which had grown primarily through writing instruments, entered the perfume market in 2001.
Before the transition to Interparfums, Procter & Gamble, referred to here as P&G, was responsible for fragrance production and distribution. Early lines including Presence were offered during that period. In January 2010, however, Interparfums and Montblanc signed a new ten-and-a-half-year licensing agreement. Taking effect on July 1, 2010, it would bring a major change to the brand’s fragrance business.
Interparfums is an independent fragrance company based in Paris, founded in 1982 by Jean Madar and Philippe Bénacin. They targeted a gap between the mass market and luxury couture: accessible prestige perfume.
The partnership with Interparfums led to the creation of Legend in 2011. The fragrance became an unprecedented hit, and Montblanc’s annual fragrance sales achieved remarkable growth of almost 400% in just four years.
“The remarkable success of the past few years is the result of close collaboration, and renewing our confidence in Interparfums for the next ten years was a natural step.”
— Jérôme Lambert, CEO of Montblanc (2015)
By 2015, Interparfums’ annual sales for the Montblanc brand had exceeded approximately €80 million. In that year the two companies extended their agreement until 2025, with further renewals following since then.
What Matters to the Brand
Stories Written in “Invisible Ink”
At the heart of Montblanc’s fragrance philosophy lie its origins as a fountain-pen brand. The idea that “just as a writing instrument leaves marks on paper, fragrance writes a story on the skin in an invisible language” is more than marketing copy: it lies at the foundation of the way its fragrance concepts are conceived.
The official website states:
“Tradition: Montblanc combines outstanding European craftsmanship with timeless design, bringing into the world creations that embody a classical heritage and refined creativity.”
This return to “craftsmanship” and “tradition” is also clearly expressed in the 2024 collection marking the Meisterstück’s centenary.
Bottle Design: Vessels That Carry the Brand’s Product Aesthetic
Montblanc fragrance bottles make a statement as objects even before the scent is experienced. Legend has an embossed silver cap reminiscent of a Meisterstück cap. Explorer’s bottle is structured in deep black glass evoking the earth’s two hemispheres, with the white-star emblem engraved on its base; its surface bears the artisanal geometric engraving known as guilloché.
The bottle of Signature, a fragrance for women, takes its form from Montblanc’s traditional ink bottles, with gold decoration drawn from the Meisterstück writing instrument. It was designed by Mark Eisen.
Interparfums CEO Philippe Bénacin said of the 2024 Meisterstück collection:
“The design is inspired by the Meisterstück writing instrument. Its clean lines, elegant black and gold accents are all elements immediately associated with Montblanc. These design elements have been carefully incorporated into the bottles, creating a visual connection to writing culture.”
Working with Perfumers and Paying Attention to Ingredients
Montblanc fragrances are created through close collaboration with professional perfumers from major fragrance companies, including Givaudan. Three Givaudan perfumers participated in the development of Explorer: Antoine Maisondieu, Jordi Fernandez and Olivier Pescheux. Each brought to the project both the expertise of a “nose” specializing in particular materials and personal experiences as a traveller.
The same exacting approach can be seen in the choice of ingredients. Explorer uses organically grown, ethically produced Haitian vetiver, while its patchouli is an exclusive type developed specifically for Montblanc from material originating on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.
The Fragrance Lineup
Montblanc’s fragrance portfolio can be broadly divided into three groups: men’s fragrances, women’s fragrances and collection fragrances.
The Core of the Men’s Range: Legend
Created in 2011 through the partnership with Interparfums, Legend remains one of Montblanc’s signature fragrances. It is based on the fougère family, a classic masculine fragrance structure built around lavender, oakmoss and coumarin, and combines ingredients such as bergamot, lavender, pineapple leaf, apple, sandalwood and tonka bean. Its perfumer is Olivier Pescheux, who also worked on numerous celebrated fragrances, including Paco Rabanne’s 1 Million.
Legend was subsequently developed into a number of flankers, or variations:
- Legend Spirit (2016): A fresher fragrance suited to spring and summer, combining grapefruit, cardamom and white woods
- Legend Night (2017): A more sensual evening fragrance built around spices, vanilla and dark woods
- Legend Blue (2024): A variation reinterpreted in a woody, aromatic, fresh direction. Singer John Legend appeared in the advertising campaign in 2024
A Montblanc Bestseller: Explorer
Released in 2019, Explorer is now a bestselling representative of Montblanc’s fragrance line. With its distinctive woody, aromatic, leathery character, it combines three ingredients identified by their origins: Italian bergamot, Haitian vetiver and Indonesian patchouli. Together they embody the concept of an explorer travelling the world.
Explorer also has several flankers, including Explorer Extreme, unveiled in 2025. Created by Jordi Fernandez and Antoine Maisondieu, it was the line’s first fragrance in parfum concentration, with amber and leather accords giving it depth. The bottle was presented alongside a campaign photographed in Saudi Arabia’s AlUla desert and has a textured design inspired by Montblanc’s Extreme 3.0 leather-goods collection.
Distinctive Men’s Fragrances: Individuel and Starwalker
Introduced in 2003, Individuel was composed by Pierre Bourdon, known for celebrated fragrances such as Davidoff Cool Water. It layers the sweetness of fruit and flowers over a soft lingering impression of musk and woods. Initially a relatively inconspicuous presence, it gradually gained popularity among fragrance enthusiasts and has often been recommended as “a superb fragrance at an affordable price.” Although sometimes described as discontinued, its distribution varies by market and retailer, and it continues to enjoy a loyal following.
Launched in 2005, Starwalker is a woody, spicy fragrance for men, introduced around the same time as Montblanc’s fountain-pen collection of the same name. Composed by Michel Almairac, it includes mandarin, bamboo, bergamot, ginger and cedarwood.
The Women’s Range: Lady Emblem and Signature
Introduced in 2012, Legend Pour Femme helped broaden Montblanc’s offering of women’s fragrances. Further development in the women’s fragrance market was also set out as a clear objective when the agreement with Interparfums was extended in 2015.
Lady Emblem is a floral fragrance for women, layering powdery sandalwood and musk over rose-centred floral and fruity notes. Signature, introduced in 2020, follows a floral-oriental composition of clementine, magnolia, ylang-ylang, peony, vanilla and white musk. Its bottle takes its inspiration from an ink bottle, and Franco-Belgian author Diane Ducret became the face of its campaign.
The Collection: Celebrating the Meisterstück’s Centenary (2024)
The year 2024 marked the hundredth anniversary of the Meisterstück. To celebrate, Montblanc introduced The Montblanc Collection, comprising four unisex creations.
- Black Meisterstück: A substantial fragrance featuring Somali frankincense and Ambroxan, evoking the black body of the writing instrument. Composed by Jordi Fernandez
- Patchouli Ink: Combining bergamot, Indonesian dark patchouli and smoky vanilla, it translates the magic of ink into scent. Composed by Fabrice Pellegrin
- Extreme Leather: A creation expressing the sensual texture of leather goods, with leather enveloped in iris and musk. Composed by Juliette Karagueuzoglou
- Vetiver Glacier: A fragrance embodying the majestic outline and cool freshness of Mont Blanc
CEO Bénacin said of the collection:
“This anniversary is an opportunity to honour Montblanc’s history while shaping its future. The collection pays homage to the iconic facets of our house and embodies the values established through its pioneering role in writing culture and craftsmanship.”
By the Way…
- The Perfume Society recounts an intriguing anecdote about the origin of the Montblanc company name: “At a card game played for stakes, a relative of one of the founders saw an analogy between the pen, the pinnacle of writing instruments, and Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps.” The site itself qualifies this as a “rumour,” however, and it is not officially confirmed primary-source information.
- The Starwalker bottle has a distinctive design based on the fountain pen of the same name, and several reviewers have noted that it also incorporates elements reminiscent of a watch dial. This approach to products, conscious of the interplay between pens, perfumes and watches, speaks to the depth of the Montblanc brand.
- The emblem decorating the Explorer Extreme bottle is assembled by hand by artisans in Florence. Bringing European craftsmanship even to the details of a perfume bottle shows that the pride of a writing-instrument house also lives on in its fragrance division.
