Amouage: The Story of the Perfume House Known as “The Gift of Kings”

“A symphony that brings my work to its pinnacle: that is Gold.”
— Guy Robert, Amouage’s first perfumer

Basic Information

  • Brand: Amouage
  • Founded: 1983
  • Founder: Sayyid Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi
  • Headquarters: Muscat, Sultanate of Oman
  • Operating company: Oman Perfumery LLC, part of the SABCO Group
  • Official website: https://amouage.com

The name Amouage is a coined word combining the French amour, meaning love, with the Arabic amwaj (أمواج), meaning waves. Officially described as meaning “waves of emotions,” it symbolizes Oman’s long coastline and the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures.

The Founder and the Origins of the Brand

Oman, the Land of Frankincense

To understand Amouage’s story, we first need to understand Oman’s exceptional place in the history of fragrance.

Dhofar, in southern Oman, is one of the world’s rare regions where the frankincense tree, Boswellia sacra, grows naturally. Its resin has been harvested for at least 5,000 years. In antiquity, frankincense was worth as much as, or more than, gold, and the Frankincense Route, stretching from the Mediterranean to China, passed through Oman. Of the gold, frankincense, and myrrh offered to Jesus Christ by the Magi, two were gifts nurtured by Oman’s land.

A Sultan’s Wish and a Royal Family Member’s Resolve

In the 1970s, Oman entered a “renaissance” of modernization under Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said. As the country moved toward peace and prosperity, an idea began to take shape.

According to Amouage, it began as follows. In the early 1980s, Sayyid Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi, a member of the royal family, visited Sultan Qaboos and proposed creating a brand that would introduce Oman’s fragrant heritage to the world. The exact year has not been officially specified; only that it was before the company’s foundation in 1983. This brand would revive the ancient heritage of Oman, which had linked Arabia, East Africa, and distant Eastern and Western civilizations in the age of the Silk Road. It was to be a gift from His Majesty to the world. Thus Amouage, known as “The Gift of Kings,” was born.

In an interview with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Amouage described the motivation behind its foundation in these words.

“Sayyid Hamad’s vision was to introduce Oman’s heritage in perfumery to the world and create perfumes of the highest international standard, encapsulating the unique scents of the Orient, and of Oman in particular.”
— Rabin Chatterjee, Amouage finance representative, in an interview with WIPO

It is worth noting that the early Amouage perfumes were not made primarily for sale. Initially, they were special gifts for state guests and dignitaries visiting Oman. The National Museum in Muscat displays a collection of original bottles adorned with crystal and 24-karat gold that Sultan Qaboos presented to his guests in 1983.

The Encounter with Perfumer Guy Robert: The Birth of Gold

Founder Sayyid Hamad chose the French master Guy Robert (in Japanese) (1926–2012) to create the house’s first fragrance. Born into a family of perfumers in Grasse, Robert was responsible for some of the defining works of twentieth-century French perfumery, including Hermès (in Japanese)‘s Calèche (1961), Madame Rochas (1960), and Dior’s Dioressence (around 1969). He was a versatile artist who was also a musician, writer, and gourmet.

Robert’s brief was both exceptionally simple and bold: make the most beautiful perfume, with no cost constraints and complete freedom to use the finest natural materials. It was an absolute carte blanche.

The result was Gold, born in 1983. More than 120 natural fragrance ingredients were used lavishly, including Omani rock rose, Hojari frankincense of the highest grade, myrrh, rose, jasmine, lily of the valley, ambergris, and sandalwood. It was a grand composition layering Arabian resins and flowers over a French classical structure illuminated by aldehydes (in Japanese). One perfume critic described it as “Chanel (in Japanese) N°5 on steroids.”

Robert himself regarded Gold as the masterpiece of his career.

“A symphony that crowns my work as a perfumer.”
— Guy Robert

A masculine version, Gold Man, was subsequently added. Released in the early 1980s, like Gold Woman, it is considered one of the important works of Robert’s later years. Gold Man uses a lavish array of natural fragrance materials, generally said to number at least 100, and holds a deep animalic sensuality beneath its aldehydic brilliance.

In 1991, Amouage won Star Product of the Year at the Tax-free World Exhibition in Cannes, now TFWA, gaining international recognition. Nevertheless, its presence on the international market was still limited, with most sales concentrated in Oman and the Gulf region.

Quiet Beginnings: Collaborations with Master Perfumers

Following Gold’s success, Amouage gradually expanded its collection through collaborations with several renowned perfumers. In 2002, Jean-Claude Ellena (in Japanese), known as the in-house perfumer at Hermès, created Dia. Often described as Gold’s younger sister, Dia Woman revealed a gentler side of the house through a spirited powdery floral.

By this time, Amouage was already making perfumes of unparalleled quality, but its development as a global brand had not yet begun in earnest.

The Great Transformation: The David Crickmore and Christopher Chong Era, 2006–2019

The appointment of David Crickmore as CEO in 2006 changed Amouage’s destiny decisively. With 29 years of experience in the British luxury industry, Crickmore had led brands including Ozwald Boateng and Dunhill.

Immediately after joining, Crickmore began a complete reassessment and restructuring of the brand. In November 2007, it was relaunched to coincide with its twenty-fifth anniversary, and Amouage was quite literally reborn. Central to that transformation was Christopher Chong, who was brought in as creative director.

Born in Hong Kong, raised in New York, and based in London, Chong followed an unusual path. After running a modeling agency, he earned a master’s degree in literature, languages, and European thought in London.

“Amouage has its own DNA: opulence and richness. My DNA, on the other hand, is mystery, unpredictability, and storytelling. When those two come together, an exceptionally powerful brand is born.”
— Christopher Chong

Chong’s greatest innovation was bringing the concept of narrative to Amouage’s fragrances. Each creation had its own story, yet together they formed a continuous, interconnected epic. Jubilation, marking the twenty-fifth anniversary, began with a nymph singing to the moon; Lyric described her quest for immortality when she was still human; and Epic continued the adventure as she sought to become a legend.

Chong also placed great importance on film. A film was made for each creation in the main collection.

“The only universal language for expressing a perfume and the emotions and stories behind it is the visual.”
— Christopher Chong

Developing a new perfume takes around 18 months, with perfumers in Paris, Grasse, Geneva, and New York submitting as many as 250 trials in response to a single brief. Costs are considered only after the finalists have been chosen. The policy of granting complete freedom at the outset to maximize creativity directly carries forward the founding spirit of Gold.

Signature fragrances from this era, including Jubilation XXV (2007–2008, composed by Bertrand Duchaufour), Interlude, Reflection, Honour, and Memoir, have become the iconic classics that define Amouage today.

International expansion also accelerated. Before the rebranding, international sales accounted for only 10% of the total; within just one year of the relaunch, that share had jumped to 40%. Crickmore reflected on it in an interview with Arab News.

“When we first repositioned and relaunched, we worried that our long-standing customers might not like the change. But people liked the new Amouage and accepted our message.”
— David Crickmore, CEO

In May 2019, Crickmore stepped down as CEO after 13 years. Chong left Amouage at around the same time. Chairman Sayyid Khalid, the founder’s son, who had succeeded his brother Sayyid Badr in 2003, said in a statement:

“We thank David for everything he put into relaunching Amouage and building it into what it is today.”
— Sayyid Khalid bin Hamad Al Busaidi, chairman of SABCO Group

A New Era: The Arrival of Renaud Salmon, 2019–Present

Marco Parsiegla succeeded Crickmore as EVP, while Renaud Salmon was welcomed as the new leader of the house’s creative direction. Born in Belgium, Salmon had worked in both fragrance creation and art direction for companies including Coty (in Japanese) and Marc Jacobs (in Japanese).

Salmon received Amouage’s offer while working in New York. He says that the moment he arrived in Muscat, he was deeply moved by the authenticity of the place and the family’s sincerity.

“Freedom was at the center of it. I often think of videos of cows being let out after years of confinement: hesitant at first, then leaping with joy. That mixture of liberation and responsibility is exactly what my journey at Amouage has been.”
— Renaud Salmon

Salmon’s approach was a gentle transformation rather than an abrupt reboot. Calling the house’s archives a treasure rather than a constraint, he guided gradual change over six years. He says this attitude closely aligns with Oman’s philosophy of subtle, meaningful progress.

Under Salmon, Amouage began establishing a new collection structure. This included the Renaissance Collection in 2020, four creations inspired by Oman’s natural world; the revival of attars, traditional oil-based perfumes, in 2021; and the restructuring of the Library Collection in 2022. Guidance, composed by Quentin Bisch and a worldwide hit in 2023, swept up multiple international honors, including the Belgian Beauty Awards, a Fragrance Foundation France award, and the American BeautyMatter NEXT Awards.

In 2025, Salmon was selected for Vogue Business’s 100 Innovators.

The Brand’s Commitments

The Philosophy of Fragrance Creation

The word that runs through Amouage’s approach to perfumery is “generosity.” Former CEO Crickmore once expressed it this way:

“Our perfumes deliberately sing their own song. Rather than chasing trends, we prefer to forge our own direction.”
— David Crickmore

The house’s refusal to compromise on the quality or quantity of ingredients has remained unchanged since its foundation. In the WIPO interview, it stated that it believed its fragrances contained a higher concentration of pure perfume concentrate than any other perfume in the world. It uses both natural and synthetic materials sourced worldwide, including Omani frankincense (in Japanese), Bulgarian rose (in Japanese), Indian oud (in Japanese), and ambergris (in Japanese), with a particularly strong emphasis on natural ingredients.

Since 2022, Amouage has also made major strides in ingredient traceability. Through a partnership with Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, it took over the management of Wadi Dawkah, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Dhofar. Hundreds of frankincense trees grow naturally across this five-kilometer stretch of land, where Amouage is establishing an integrated system for sustainable cultivation, harvesting, and distillation in-house. The first official harvest took place in 2023, and in 2025 the site became the first on the Arabian Peninsula to receive FairWild certification, an international standard for the sustainable collection of wild ingredients.

“As custodians of this important UNESCO World Heritage site, it is our duty to protect the land, its traditional communities, and its culture.”
— Sayyid Khalid bin Hamad Al Busaidi, chairman of Amouage

Bottle and Packaging Design

Amouage’s bottle design is more than a container: it is an Omani cultural icon.

  • The caps of the women’s fragrances: Shaped after the dome of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat. A Swarovski crystal at the top pays tribute to the mosque’s enormous Swarovski chandelier.
  • The men’s fragrance bottles: Modeled on the handle of the khanjar, the traditional ceremonial dagger also depicted in Oman’s national emblem.
  • The logo: A design recalling the coat of arms of Oman’s royal family.
  • Decoration: Oriental filigree in sterling silver, with an optional 24-karat gold-leaf finish, adorns the bottle’s surface. It derives from traditional Middle Eastern window ornamentation.

All bottles are finished by hand at the Muscat factory and come with a certificate. The two-story facility opened in December 2012 and has a production capacity of around 25,000 bottles per week. It is also open to the public.

Transparency and Digital Innovation

In July 2025, Amouage joined the Aura Blockchain Consortium, founded by LVMH, the Prada Group, and Cartier. It was the first beauty brand and the first Middle Eastern brand to join. Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are being introduced for all new releases, and approximately three million existing products are also being registered retrospectively on the blockchain.

“It is clear that digital innovation will transform the future of luxury.”
— Renaud Salmon

The Fragrance Lineup

Over at least 40 years, Amouage has released more than 50 fragrances. Its current collection structure is as follows.

The Main Collection (The Odyssey Collection)

The house’s core line began with Gold in 1983 and includes Dia, Ciel, Reflection, Jubilation XXV, Lyric, Epic, Memoir, Honour, Interlude, Beloved, and the recent blockbuster Guidance, launched in 2023 and composed by Quentin Bisch. Guidance reinterprets and brings together Amouage’s three defining ingredients, rose, frankincense, and ambergris, and has won multiple international perfume awards.

The fragrances are offered as men’s, women’s, or unisex creations, composed by renowned perfumers in Paris, Grasse, Geneva, and New York.

Renaissance Collection

Launched by Salmon in 2020 and inspired by Oman’s natural landscapes, this collection consists of four fragrances: Enclave, evoking the inlets of Musandam; Crimson Rocks; Ashore, the coast; and Meander, Dhofar’s monsoon. Colorful translucent bottles distinguish the collection.

The Library Collection

An experimental line begun in 2010, with bold compositions that move beyond conventional ideas and explore humanity’s insatiable quest for knowledge. Restructured by Salmon, it now centers on five creations: Opus V, VII, XII, XIII, and the new Opus XIV Royal Tobacco. It is also positioned as the house’s equivalent of haute couture.

Secret Garden Collection

A collection of sweet, approachable floral gourmands (in Japanese), consisting of Lilac Love, Blossom Love, Love Tuberose, and Love Delight.

Exceptional Extraits

Special editions that reinterpret signature fragrances from the main collection at even higher concentrations, 43–56% pure oil, and age them for several months. They include Interlude 53 Man, Reflection 45 Man, Honour 43 Woman, Epic 56 Woman, Dia 40 Woman, and Jubilation 40 Man.

“The Exceptional Extraits demand both humility and patience: humility before nature’s living materials, and patience to reflect, age, question, blend, begin again, and wait for the moment in the light.”
— Renaud Salmon

The Attars Collection

A collection of traditional oil-based perfumes revived by Salmon in 2021. It combines modern perfumery with classical attar techniques, based on essential oils (in Japanese). Amber Sogara and Santal Sohar were added in 2023.

The Essences

The latest collection, unveiled in 2025. Containing 30% pure perfume oil, its fragrances are completed through six months of aging, including a double infusion with sandalwood chips and oak barrels. The bottle is also the house’s first new design in 15 years.

“The Essences is about shaping a magical future for the olfactory world.”
— Renaud Salmon

Incidentally…

  • The most lavish gift: Amouage Gold was once not a commercial product, but existed solely as a special gift from Sultan Qaboos to kings and princes around the world. Even after sales began, the most opulent bottles were kept at the Muscat showroom and reserved as gifts for dignitaries visiting Oman.
  • The original bottle was by Asprey: The original 1983 Gold bottle had a body of 24% lead crystal and a 24-karat gold-plated domed cap, inspired by the Palace Ruwi Mosque in Muscat. It was made at the Waltersperger crystal workshop in Normandy, France.
  • Pronouncing Amouage correctly: Although it sounds French, the coined name is neither purely French nor purely Arabic. Its official pronunciation is close to “a-mouage,” and the usual Japanese katakana rendering is Amuāju.
  • The Al Busaidi brothers: Founder Sayyid Hamad’s sons now lead the brand. His second son, Sayyid Badr, served as its first chairman; his younger brother Sayyid Khalid succeeded him in 2003. The youngest brother, Sayyid Aymen, is vice-chairman.
  • A collaboration with opera: In October 2025, Amouage and the Royal Opera House Muscat introduced Sindbad, a fragrance inspired by the opera Sindbad: The Omani Sailor.
  • Amouage in numbers, as of 2025: Sold in at least 80 countries, with 21 directly operated boutiques and around 250 employees. The house made a full-scale entry into the American market in 2024.
