Career in Perfumery
We are not trying to change the world. We are simply trying to enjoy ourselves and make ourselves happy, and we want to share that happiness with others.
Jean Guichard
Jean Guichard was born in Grasse, France, into a family that had grown flowers for the perfume industry for generations.
He is said to have originally been interested in international trade, but by chance became interested in the profession of perfumer and joined Robertet. In 1984, he joined Roure, now Givaudan, where working with Jean Amic led to the creation of many renowned perfumes, including Calvin Klein (in Japanese)’s Obsession, Dior (in Japanese)’s Poison, and Cacharel’s LouLou. In 2000, he became the first recipient of the Prix François Coty (in Japanese). He became director of the Givaudan Perfumery School in 2004 and is also responsible for selecting its students.
His son, Aurélien Guichard (in Japanese), is also active as a perfumer today. Perfumers and industry figures who studied under Jean Guichard include Frédéric Malle (in Japanese), Antoine Lie, and Quentin Bisch (in Japanese).
A good perfumer is not someone with a good nose. It is someone who can imagine and invent what the market wants.

Perfume Creations
Every era has its great perfumes, great film directors, great musicians, and its fashion. A great perfumer must be able to express the spirit of the time and embody that era while doing what they love.
