The Founder and the Brand’s Origins

Growing Up in Northern France

Arnaud Poulain was born in Arras, northern France, in 1986. His grandparents have been described as farmers, his father as a metalworker, and his uncle as a cabinetmaker: a family embodying craftsmanship and hard work. He later described those roots as “coming from agricultural soil, with no connection to the world of perfume.” School was not his strong point, and at 12 he experienced the loss of his mother. He is said to have turned that grief into determination.

After completing a two-year university diploma in technology, or DUT, Arnaud began working in automation at an ice cream brand’s factory. Electrical and mechanical engineering, with their precise and logical world, would form the foundation of his later approach to perfumery.

A Book and a Fateful Encounter

In 2007, when Arnaud was 21, something happened that would change his life. The ice cream factory’s manager introduced him to his own son, who had moved into the perfume industry, saying, “There is someone just as ambitious as you.” Through that encounter, Arnaud picked up Jean-Claude Ellena’s book Le parfum.

“Reading this book made me realize that life does not end at 21. You can transform yourself completely and change your life from the ground up.”

— Arnaud Poulain

By the time he finished reading, Arnaud had decided to become a perfumer.

Chanel and Byredo: Apprenticeship and Setbacks

Entering the world of fragrance, Arnaud learned the basics at SIADEP, a vocational training institution in Lens. A fateful encounter awaited him there: his instructor Amélie Bourgeois of Studio Flair. A year later, Arnaud was among the school’s highest achievers and caught the eye of the director of Chanel’s French fragrance division.

At Chanel, he achieved strong results as a salesperson and was approached about a job at Galeries Lafayette. But Arnaud declined: he was serious about making fragrance, rather than selling it.

Around 2009, he took on work for a small niche fragrance brand, Byredo, handling its expansion into Le Bon Marché. This brought him to Paris for the first time, where he also happened to encounter Bernard Arnault. But when Byredo was acquired, Arnaud found himself without a place to go.

“I was lost. I kept knocking on perfumers’ doors, but because I had no background in the industry, they all turned me away.”

— Arnaud Poulain

Building His Own Manufacture: The Birth of Les Eaux Primordiales

In 2015, Arnaud began making his first perfumes in his garage. Chilling fragrances in his refrigerator and using his home as a production workshop, he completed an initial collection of six creations. He successfully pitched them to Colette, and the brand Les Eaux Primordiales was born.

An investment of €300,000 from business angels then accelerated the venture. Based at Le Domaine Primordial, a 14-hectare estate in Acq in northern France, the brand developed an integrated in-house operation covering manufacturing and bottling as well as woodworking and display production. At the time of a Forbes France interview published in its winter 2023 issue, the company had grown to €3 million in revenue and a workforce of 40.

The Birth of a Second Brand: Perroy Parfum

Arnaud, who has firmly resisted selling to a major group, has a clear ambition: to build his own multibrand Groupe Primordial. Perroy Parfum, his second brand, made its debut in 2024 as part of that vision.

In September 2024, Arnaud himself posted on LinkedIn: “The April launch far exceeded our expectations and was a real success. The niche perfume market is growing by around 10% a year, and a category called ‘entry niche’ is emerging, offering affordable prices while retaining a niche spirit. That is exactly where Perroy sits.”

The brand’s name is not a marketing invention. Le Bois du Perroy is the name of the tranquil woodland in which its creative studio is rooted.

“It is a place where ideas can breathe. The balance between stillness and energy is what I want people to feel in Perroy. Natural yet electric, rooted yet free.”

— Arnaud Poulain

A two-century-old château stands in that woodland, and Perroy’s perfumes are manufactured and filled there.

The Brand’s Commitments

A Philosophy of Fragrance: An “Architect and Engineer” Working Together

All Perroy perfumes are created jointly by Arnaud and his longtime collaborator Amélie Bourgeois. Arnaud compares their relationship to designing a building.

“It is like the relationship between an architect and an engineer. Amélie is the engineer, and I am the architect. I work with Amélie, Sophie, and the whole team at Studio Flair. They are truly magical, very strong and very creative in perfumery. We collaborate with open formulas, sharing the formulations as we work.”

— Arnaud Poulain

A brand introduction contributed to The Perfume Society includes this passage: “We put the fragrance at the center. It is usually a collaborative process involving two or three members of Flair, each bringing a different area of expertise. The aim is always the same: a contemporary, creative, perfectly balanced composition.”

Arnaud’s individuality as a perfumer lies in a mechanical engineer’s precision. “I see every ingredient as a cog or wheel in a mechanism. I always create with a particular vision, never overdosing, and always seeking the delicate balance that elevates the materials.”

The Accessible Pricing of “Entry Niche”

Perroy Parfum’s philosophy can be summed up as “niche quality at an accessible price.” European prices reported at launch were €25 for 15 ml, €80 for 50 ml, and €120 for 100 ml. At its Japanese debut in 2025, the range was offered at ¥6,050 for 15 ml and ¥17,600 for 50 ml, both including tax.

Bottle Design: Combining AI and Handcraft

Each fragrance bottle is distinguished by vivid color and a minimal form. The colors correspond to moods, and the design is intended to make the bottles collectible. Particularly notable is the active use of AI technology in creating the brand’s visual identity. Traditional perfume-making by hand, with manual production and filling in France, meets contemporary AI-assisted creative work: this combination shapes Perroy’s distinctive character.

Handmade in France

All the perfumes are made by hand in France. Highly concentrated, diffusive formulas are said to provide lasting wear and a strong impression. As Arnaud’s words, “leave an unforgettable impression wherever you go,” suggest, longevity is fundamental to the brand.

The Fragrance Lineup

At Perroy Parfum’s Japanese debut in 2025, the collection consisted of eight eaux de parfum, or EDPs, and a perfume kit offering all eight to try.

Each perfume has its own color and mood, with hashtag-style mood labels aimed at the Instagram generation, such as #SELFCONFIDENT and #FLIRTY. All the fragrance names combine a color with a motif from nature, giving the collection a coherent identity.

Eight Scents and Moods

Ivory Sky — #SELFCONFIDENT
A powdery-woody fragrance. It opens with bergamot, moves into a sandalwood heart, and rests on a vetiver base. A central creation in the collection, described by Arnaud as “the first perfume I made.” He has also called it “the most universal of the unisex creations.”

Tangerine Pearl — #ENERGETIC
A citrus fragrance combining grapefruit, ginger, and iris. In Arnaud’s words, it is “a California sunrise,” an energizing scent like a glass of orange juice in the morning.

Azure Blush — #FLIRTY
A fruity-floral fragrance with lychee at the top, a peony heart, and a rhubarb base. It is described as the most feminine-oriented of the eight.

Mahogany Sun — #SUNNY
A floral-vanilla fragrance composed of frangipani, or plumeria, fig, and vanilla. Footage has shown it being filled at the manufacture, and Arnaud calls it “the most diffusive fragrance in the collection.”

Pink Fire — #SEXY
A fruity-woody fragrance combining pomegranate, raspberry, and amberwood. Arnaud suggests wearing “Ivory Sky during the day, and Pink Fire at night.” Modern woods and patchouli create its “hot and spicy” presence.

Blond Purple — #SENSUAL
A tropical-nectar fragrance composed of mango, ylang-ylang, and blackcurrant. Arnaud himself calls it “the most unpredictable creation in the collection.” It is said to express “the feel of mango skin” through fragrance.

Blue Forest — #CLASSY
A spicy-woody fragrance composed of cedar, black pepper, and musk. Described as “the most masculine of the eight,” it is, in Arnaud’s words, “a scent for the futuristic gentleman of 2024.”

Gold Fawn — #POWERFUL
A vanillic-amber fragrance combining sandalwood, vanilla, and cedar. The only bottle fitted with a gold pump, it is described as “the most powerful, most full-bodied fragrance in the collection.”

The Pleasure of Layering

Perroy particularly recommends layering, or wearing several scents together. Each fragrance is designed to work both alone and in layers, and the brand officially suggests several combinations:

  • Ivory Sky + Blue Forest
  • Blue Forest + Tangerine Pearl
  • Mahogany Sun + Gold Fawn

A Perfume Kit, also called the Mood Palette, offers all eight in miniature, with eight 2.5 ml vials, serving as an introduction for those trying Perroy for the first time.

By the Way…

  • Perroy Parfum made its Japanese debut in March 2025. An advance launch took place on March 1, 2025, at the Osaka branch of niche fragrance specialist NOSE SHOP, followed on March 21 by a wider rollout at its Shibuya, Ikebukuro, and Osaka stores and online.
  • Groupe Primordial, founded by Arnaud, follows a multibrand strategy encompassing Perroy Parfum, its entry-niche perfume brand; the flagship Les Eaux Primordiales, positioned in high-end niche perfumery; and a third brand, House of Serenity, devoted to the art of the home.
  • Arnaud has explicitly stated that he has no intention of selling his company to a major group, and envisages eventually channeling the business’s profits into a foundation that nurtures luxury craftsmanship.
  • Although Perroy’s visual identity makes extensive use of AI, the perfumes themselves are manufactured and filled by hand in a French workshop. This coexistence of technology and craftsmanship may be an expression of the aesthetic of Arnaud himself, a perfumer with a background in engineering.
