“We often say that we were born from a drop of wax and grew up in a drop of perfume. From our family, we learned the old artisan skills. As children, it was normal to distinguish every kind of smell and play games guessing scents while blindfolded. Only when we grew up did we realise that we had been learning the perfumer’s craft, passed down through three generations.”

The Founders and the Origins of the Brand
The Terenzi Family: A History Dating Back to 1400
To tell the story of Tiziana Terenzi, we must turn the clock back as far as the fifteenth century. The Terenzi family traces its roots to Gabriele Terenzi, who lived in Cattolica in the 1400s. Since then, members of the family have made their name in many different fields, as leaders, explorers, inventors, cavalry officers, musicians and poets.
Grandfather Guglielmo: The First Step into Fragrance (1950s)
The Terenzi family’s connection with fragrance began in the time of Tiziana and Paolo’s grandfather, Guglielmo Terenzi. In the 1950s, Guglielmo began making devotional, or votive, candles for local churches. The work of supplying candles to the Vatican and churches elsewhere marked the beginning of a deep involvement with fragrance.
Paolo later said of his grandfather:
“My grandfather Guglielmo taught me everything about fragrance. He was my teacher and my eternal model of style.”
— Paolo Terenzi (from an interview with L’Officiel Monaco)
Father Evelino: From a 16-Square-Metre Workshop to the European Market (1968 Onwards)
Guglielmo’s son, Evelino Terenzi, took over his father’s work and formally established the company as Cereria Terenzi in 1968, together with his wife Luigia Mancini. The original workshop measured just 16 square metres, but a history began to unfold from that tiny space.
Evelino’s remarkable innovation was the invention of cake candles made from plant-derived materials. This invention allowed Cereria Terenzi to grow rapidly, becoming a candle manufacturer with more than 90% of the European market. Evelino was also a great lover of the sea, known as an accomplished sailor, and would exert a strong influence on the later collections.
Through his own example, Evelino showed his children an entrepreneurial spirit and a free way of living, giving them a formative education through the way he lived.
The Siblings’ Childhood: Blindfold Games as “Perfumer Training”
From an early age, Tiziana and Paolo enjoyed a special game with their grandfather Guglielmo: identifying scents while blindfolded. At the time, they thought it was simply a children’s game. Only later did they realise that it was precisely the olfactory training of a perfumer, passed down through three generations.
“As children, we smelled everything around us and played at learning scents while blindfolded. It was a game our grandfather played with us. We thought it was an ordinary children’s game, but when we grew up, we realised that we had been taught the craft of perfumery, passed down through three generations.”
— Tiziana Terenzi (from an interview with L’Officiel Monaco)
Paolo’s “Bohemian Years” and a Turning Point
As a young man, the younger brother Paolo led what might be called a bohemian life. He travelled the world as a guitarist, playing in the streets and in large theatres. While gaining degrees in law and philosophy, he also explored chemistry and physics, living freely without knowing what lay ahead.
Yet he says “the music of the family” was always playing in his ears. At 25, Paolo realised that fragrance was his true path and seriously began his life as a perfumer. He then returned to rigorous study of chemistry and the olfactory arts, eventually creating scented candles for famous brands including Acqua di Parma, Dior, Gucci, Ferragamo and Versace.
“I have been passionate about fragrance ever since I was a child. The environment in which I grew up with my sister Tiziana created our obsession with perfume. We were literally born in candles, swimming in fragrance! I was a crazy boy, travelling the world in search of every kind of experience. I played the guitar in the streets and in large theatres, living a bohemian life. …But at a certain moment, I knew this was my path. I was 25, and ever since then I have continued to love this artisan work through fragrance and emotion.”
— Paolo Terenzi (from an interview with L’Officiel Monaco)
Older Sister Tiziana: An Eye for Beauty Developed in Jewellery Design
Tiziana, meanwhile, received an arts education and became a successful jewellery designer. Her exceptional eye for beauty and sense of design would later come vividly to life in the perfume world through the brand’s bottles and packaging.
“My family allowed me to choose freely what I wanted to do with my life. I am still grateful for that. I chose to study the art of jewellery, but fragrance was already in my heart and mind. Now, through my work, I can tell all my passions as one coherent story: the design of the object, its packaging and the olfactory story within it.”
— Tiziana Terenzi (from an interview with L’Officiel Monaco)
2012: The Siblings Come Together and the Brand Is Born
Having followed their separate paths, the two siblings came together around their father Evelino, and in 2012 the fragrance brand Tiziana Terenzi was born in Cattolica, Italy. With Tiziana overseeing creative direction and visual presentation and Paolo creating every fragrance, they transformed the heritage of the family candle business into an entirely new form.
Paolo speaks candidly of the tensions that accompany the siblings’ collaboration.
“I always work with Tiziana, and we share everything: business, creativity and private life. The greatest challenge is always to satisfy her creative sensibility. We often disagree, and every day brings serious discussion. Tiziana is my motivation and, at the same time, my most difficult challenge.”
— Paolo Terenzi (from an interview with L’Officiel Monaco)
What Matters to the Brand
The Philosophy: Imperfect Beauty Is Life Itself
Tiziana Terenzi’s fragrance creation has a clear philosophy: the conviction that “life is beautiful, but not perfect.” Paolo explains:
“Travel, changing scenery, moments in life, what I felt back then, emotions: all of these inspire me when I create the Tiziana Terenzi line. I try to play emotions through fragrance. Life is beautiful, but not perfect. So my fragrances, too, are beautiful but not perfect, because I think perfection is boring.”
— Paolo Terenzi (from an interview with Style of Eurasia)
The fragrances arise from life experiences and emotions shared around a fire with friends and family while travelling. The brand’s message carries the desire to preserve in scent “those special times when beauty delights the soul and a moment becomes eternal.”
A Commitment to Ingredients: Materials Governed by Season and Weather
Tiziana Terenzi’s fragrances focus on rare, natural-origin materials sourced from a number of distant countries. Crucially, the brand takes pride in being unable to meet the demands of commercial mass production: the quantities of these ingredients are governed not by the market, but by the laws of nature, including weather and the seasons.
“Just as Italian cooking does not correct flavours with sauces or creams, ingredients are the lifeblood of our fragrances,” Tiziana says. The brand develops its own fragrance materials through a network of growers around the world built over three generations. It also says it holds rare materials such as genuine amber and musk.
The main perfumes are offered as extraits de parfum, or perfume extracts: highly concentrated fragrances. Some high-concentration creations are described as having fragrance concentrations of around 30%. Concentration varies by creation, however, and they cannot all be described as having “about twice” the concentration of an ordinary extrait de parfum.
Bottles and Packaging: “A Work of Art Does Not Permit Compromise”
Tiziana Terenzi bottles are designed as art objects. Drawing on her background as a jewellery designer, Tiziana insists on consistency between a fragrance’s story and its visual expression.
“Not only the bottle, but the box and every detail, right down to the pump mechanism, are chosen with the greatest attention and love, because a work of art does not permit compromise. Production is entirely artisanal. We assemble everything slowly, taking our time with love and without haste, because quality requires attention and beauty deserves admiration.”
— Paolo Terenzi (from an interview with L’Officiel Monaco)
Gold ornamentation, sculptural stoppers and velvet boxes are among the elements meticulously designed to suit the theme of each collection. Of this consistency in design, Paolo says, “The fragrance’s story must also be reflected in the way the perfume is expressed aesthetically.”
Every Fragrance Is Unisex
All Tiziana Terenzi fragrances are offered as unisex, without a distinction between men and women. Creating fragrances around emotional resonance, rather than “for him” or “for her,” embodies the brand’s philosophy of scent as a means of self-expression.
The Fragrance Lineup
Tiziana Terenzi’s collections are divided into several lines, each with its own theme and design language.
The Classic Collection
The brand’s foundational line is broadly divided into gold and black bottles. Some bottle caps use high-quality wood from the Apennine Mountains, and the fragrances explore the symbolic power of fire and the emotions it evokes. Well-known examples include Kirké, inspired by a nature park of woodland and dunes said to be inhabited by a goddess from Greek mythology, and White Fire, expressing the stillness of snow in the Dolomites.
The Luna Collection
This series, almost synonymous with the brand itself, explores the mysteries of the moon and the constellations. Its bottle stoppers carry bas-reliefs inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s studies of the moon’s phases, with Italian jewellery-making techniques incorporated throughout. The Luna Collection has developed further into the Luna Stars Collection, and the creations bear the names of constellations and mythological figures. Representative fragrances include Andromeda, Cassiopea, Orion and Ursa.
Orion, for example, was created from a memory of Paolo and Tiziana going out on the Adriatic by boat with their father and grandfather on a summer night, when their grandfather pointed out the constellation Orion in the darkness.
The Sea Stars Collection
An affectionate collection created by Tiziana to celebrate her younger brother Paolo’s fiftieth birthday. It is grounded in their profound love of the Adriatic, inherited from their father Evelino, and memories of their seafaring father’s love of the ocean. Each bottle is crowned with a golden starfish stopper, and the fragrances have names associated with the sea or navigation. Known as a particularly expensive line within the brand’s collections, its elaborate presentation goes so far that Atlantide is displayed and sold with the perfume bottle submerged in a vessel of real seawater.
The Anniversary Collection
This collection can be regarded as the most purist expression of the brand’s philosophy. It makes use of the individual character of natural ingredients harvested each year, so that even the same recipe takes on a slightly different face annually. Like vintage wine, each year’s edition becomes a separate collector’s item. Each bottle bears its year of production, and quantities are limited. The brand’s commitment to avoiding artificial intervention and pursuing “nature’s purity” finds its strongest expression in the Anniversary Collection. Representative creations include Bigia, Il Piacere and Vittoriale.

Two Strands of DNA: “Fire” and “Music”
Paolo once travelled the world playing guitar as a professional musician. That experience evolved into his distinctive approach of composing fragrance as though making music, reflected in his belief that “a fragrance unfolds over time like a symphony. You cannot understand the whole from a single sniff.”
The Japanese Debut Came in 2024
