Cumin is an annual plant in the carrot family, Apiaceae, whose seeds have a strong aroma, bitterness, and pungency. Its warm, weighty aromatic scent is used not only in perfumes but also in food products.
A perfume that uses cumin in generous quantities is Kingdom by Alexander McQueen, which Kilian (in Japanese) created together with Jacques Cavallier.
What Does It Smell Like in Perfume?
Cumin is a natural essential oil obtained from the seeds of Cuminum cyminum. Centered on cuminaldehyde, multiple constituents such as p-cymene, β-pinene, and γ-terpinene combine to produce dry heat and a sharp spicy character. Even a small amount gives a perfume a distinct outline, tightening sweet compositions or lending an exotic warmth to woody scents. It is not a single molecule, and its composition varies with origin, harvest time, and distillation conditions, so the balance of pungency and greenness differs even among cumin essential oils.
