Q. What makes a good atomizer different? Do you have any favorites?

A. A good atomizer produces a good spray. The same goes for perfume bottles: if the spray quality is poor, the perfume tends to land on the skin in a concentrated spot rather than across an area, making the alcohol smell more noticeable. Try pointing your own atomizer sideways and spraying it. A good one produces a wide cloud of mist, while a poor one sprays something closer to a straight line. You will probably also notice a difference in how it feels when you press the sprayer. These days you can readily buy atomizers at MUJI, 100-yen shops, and NOSE SHOP; apparently, a certain bargain-basement copycat brand sells them too.

As for my personal favorite makers, KILIAN comes first. However, KILIAN sells its fragrances in sets designed to be used with an atomizer in the first place, so buying and using them, and removing the old scent before refilling, takes some effort. For an empty atomizer, my favorite was PARFUM SATORI’s, although I believe it has been discontinued. Another maker I use often is Yamada Atomizer. This company has been selling a wide range of atomizers for years and really knows its craft. It offers plenty of variety, from inexpensive to mid-priced models. If you want lots of different looks, this is the place to go. As a rule, fragrance tends to deteriorate more readily in an atomizer, so use it up soon after transferring it.
