Q. How Can I Tell Whether a Perfume Uses Natural or Synthetic Fragrance Materials?

A. In short, you cannot tell for certain, but you can make an educated guess.

For example, when the fragrance materials used in a perfume are natural and the brand wants to highlight the care taken in selecting them, its descriptions of the materials include their place of origin. Examples include bergamot (in Japanese) from Calabria, neroli from Paraguay, and rose (in Japanese) from Grasse.
Even the same fragrance material can have different scent qualities depending on its origin, and its price changes accordingly. This is why the place of origin is often stated when a particularly carefully selected material is used.

If no place of origin is given, the material is more likely to be synthetic.
