A. Leaving aside the question of whether perfume is something one should study in the first place, I will share my own thoughts, with quotations, for perfume LOVERS who say, “I want to learn more about perfume,” and perfume salespeople who say, “I sell perfume, but I do not know how to study it. Still, I want to know more.”
What to Invest
People who talk about perfume buy even more perfume than they talk about.
Tania Sanchez
To add to that, the more money and time you spend on everything connected with perfume, the more knowledgeable about it you become. That is, in itself, studying perfume.
More specifically, if you work in perfume sales, the physical experience of buying or going out and smelling for yourself not only your own company’s products, but also other companies’ perfumes and the great fragrances of the past known as classics, becomes, above all, the “bones” of what you have to say about perfume.
・If you spend your own money and take time to savor a perfume, you will understand it more deeply than if you simply visit a counter and smell it on a blotter.
・If you visit a counter and smell it on a blotter, you will know that perfume incomparably better than if you do nothing.
The important point here is that spending time, not just money, is also a way of learning. “I do not have the money” is merely an excuse. If you do not have money, spend your time instead. Going to a counter and asking to try a perfume on a blotter, within the bounds of common sense, of course, and researching perfume online, including on this website, are free.
Learning by buying and reading books, or reading articles online, can be relatively inexpensive and need not take a great deal of time. This approach lets you learn the background and history of perfume, from its foundations to its more advanced aspects. This experience becomes the “flesh” of what you have to say about perfume.
In other words, someone who knows the materials and story behind a perfume can say more than someone who has only smelled it, and someone who knows its historical background and the perfumer’s intentions can say more still.
Perfume is absolutely not about memory and sex. Perfume is beauty and knowledge. Perfume is not a smell, but a message in a bottle. That message is written by the perfumer and read by the person who smells it.
Luca Turin
Then, share what you have learned with someone else: put it into words. I believe this is the best kind of virtuous cycle.

Build Life Experience
Perfume is art. Our appreciation of art changes not only through study, but also through life experience. Having a variety of experiences in life influences how we appreciate perfume. This is all the more true if you are considering creating perfumes yourself.
Perfumery requires training, such as learning many fragrance materials and combining them. Yet beyond technique, the more deeply moving experiences your life has held, the more radiant and beautiful your creations will be. Designing perfume belongs to the world of creation, just like every other art.

Quotes from Perfumers to Encourage Your Learning
Taste, or sensibility, can be improved by continually cultivating yourself deeply. Is this not the same as encountering painting and sculpture, or opening your heart to music and literature? Developing yourself is the way to find a perfume that is right for you. When you know yourself deeply, you will naturally come to know the fragrance that suits you best.
Edmond Roudnitska
I look back at the past a great deal, because the past is history, and history repeats itself. Of course, it does not repeat itself in exactly the same way, but values do not change. That is why I believe it is very important to remember history, study it, and keep learning more and more.
