Being able to interview 22 wonderful perfumers for this book was a kind of MBA for me.

At the time of the interviews, I noticed that all the perfumers were feeling depressed. Marketing strategies were so bad at the time that they were sick and tired of them. If Paris is the creative city of perfume that people say it is, why on earth is nobody doing anything? That was what I began to wonder.

And so I went to Le Bon Marché to ask them to stock the book.

Book Review

Memo Paris is a French perfume brand founded by the same creator behind the innovative, environmentally clean perfume brand Hermetica Paris (Hermetica’s Japanese distributor): Clara Molloy. This book records Clara Molloy’s direct interviews with 22 leading contemporary perfumers, including Jean-Paul Guerlain, Jacques and Olivier Polge, Sophia Grojsman, and Jean-Claude Ellena.

This is the only book in history devoted entirely to full interviews with so many perfumers, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about perfumers or is looking for things to talk about. The interviews range widely, from the background to the creation of signature perfumes to the perfumers’ hobbies.

Incidentally, the book opens with words from Serge Mansau.

I never received any training as a perfumer, nor did I have a master or a teacher. So I found my own way of composing perfumes. When I imagine a formula, I see colors. That is the visual side of my creativity.
