Book Review
Written by Miya Shinma, one of Japan’s leading perfumers, this book aims to help readers blend essential oils to make their own original perfumes. It takes you through the pyramid method (in Japanese) developed by Jean Carles, fragrance families, and examples of classic perfumes, step by step as you compose scents.
Happily, the book does not stop at blending: it also teaches us through stories about the perfume industry, explanations of the background to the classic perfumes used as models, and advice on the mindset of a perfumer. No other perfume-related book combines such a satisfying reading experience with such a high standard as a practical guide. This is certainly a book to pick up.
By learning how the themes and concepts of classic perfumes were created, you become able to imagine how the perfumer chose and formulated the scents, and to understand how these wonderful works are put together.
