SHEGREEN: Designing Stillness Through Scent

“Beauty is not something to show to others. It resides in the time we spend connecting with ourselves.”
── Yoshimune Noda, founder of SHEGREEN

The brand name is a coined word combining “SHE,” meaning the Earth and nature, with “GREEN,” meaning renewal and harmony. Its tagline is [ No Form ] The more you wear, the freer you become. It distills the idea of layering an ever-changing sensibility without being bound by form.

The Founder and the Brand’s Origins

A Leading Figure in Organic Beauty: Yoshimune Noda

SHEGREEN’s founder, Yoshimune Noda, is an indispensable figure in any account of Japan’s organic beauty market. His name first became widely known through the introduction of john masters organics to Japan.

john masters organics, or JMO, is an organic cosmetics brand founded in 1991 by John Masters, a hairstylist in New York’s SoHo. Yoshimune Noda co-founded Styla Inc. with his wife, Maiko Noda, and introduced the brand to the Japanese market in 2007 as its exclusive distributor for Japan and East Asia. With the concept of “a luxury beauty line that respects the Earth,” its premium organic products, promoted as 100% plant-derived, rapidly gained support in Japan and helped establish the idea of organic cosmetics in the country.

Taking the Helm of a Global Brand

In 2013, Styla International, led by Noda, acquired a majority stake in the US-based JMO, and Noda became its CEO and a director. At its peak, annual global sales reportedly reached approximately ¥20 billion, with Japan accounting for 30–40%.

In 2016, a subsidiary of the British investment firm Permira acquired majority stakes in Styla and JMO at an enterprise value of ¥37 billion. John Masters Organics Group was established, and Noda became its representative director. Permira had supported the global expansion of brands including Hugo Boss, Valentino, and Dr. Martens, and the aim was to further internationalize JMO.

In September 2017, however, JMO faced a major trial. Synthetic ingredients such as silicones that were not listed on ingredient labels were found in some products promoted as “100% plant-derived,” leading to a voluntary recall of 38 items. The problem was attributed to a contract manufacturer in the United States, but criticism from consumers was intense.

Noda subsequently became president of the Japan Company in April 2019. In 2020, Styla acquired all the shares in JMO Holdings Limited held by Permira. As Representative Director and CEO, Noda came to lead the entire global organization, including Japan.

A New Brand Born on Earth Day

After many years in the world of organic beauty, Noda’s next undertaking was in fragrance.

SHEGREEN was born on April 22, 2025, Earth Day, the international observance dedicated to thinking about the global environment. At the brand’s founding, Noda wrote on its official website:

“After spending many years in organic beauty and the world of sensibility, working with many brands, what I came to see was that beauty is not something to show to others. It resides in the time we spend connecting with ourselves. Valuing that sensibility, SHEGREEN hopes to become an open space where a new self can gently begin to sprout.”
── Yoshimune Noda

On November 21, 2025, it quietly began operating online only, launching with a collection of twenty fragrances composed in its own laboratory. In December that year, it released The Stillness Ritual, a ritual collection for hotels and spas. It then held its “grand launch” on February 14, 2026, updating its brand visuals and simultaneously introducing all ten Aromatic Mist varieties.

The brand also established its first directly operated location, SHEGREEN Gallery & Store Ebisu, in Tokyo’s Ebisu district. The brand’s first pop-up, announced by Daikanyama Tsutaya Books, ran from March 20 to April 7, 2026, and has now ended. Its rapid expansion in less than a year, from online retail to physical stores, hospitality products, hair care, and lifestyle goods, vividly demonstrates Noda’s experience in brand building.

The Brand’s Commitments

Fragrance as “The Design of Time”

A consistent thread in SHEGREEN’s approach to making products is its view of fragrance as “the design of time.” The official website states:

“At SHEGREEN, we place importance on giving every fragrance its own most beautiful time.”

The initial impression when a scent touches the skin, its top notes; its depth an hour later, the middle notes; and the lingering impression that unexpectedly returns hours afterward, the base notes: designing this entire sequence of changes as “one story” is the core of the brand’s perfumery philosophy.

A Fragrance Laboratory in Daikanyama

Giving form to this philosophy is Fragrance Lab. Daikanyama, the brand’s own creative laboratory in a quiet corner of Tokyo’s Daikanyama district. Here, perfumers and creators carry out fragrance planning, development, and testing as an integrated process, keeping control of both the philosophy and quality in-house.

Notably, the research extends beyond fragrance structure, ingredient selection, and longevity testing to encompass relationships with “emotions and stimuli such as sound and light.” The lab also develops links with IRIP, its AI fragrance-assessment system.

SHEGREEN has a group of perfumers known as its Perfumer Team. It is centered on perfumers with more than a decade of professional experience at fragrance companies who can distinguish at least 2,000 scents. The team brings together professionals from diverse backgrounds, including specialists in fragrance development for Japan and members who have formulated scents from around the world primarily for overseas markets.

A Distinctive Fragrance Wheel

SHEGREEN’s individuality also extends to how fragrances are chosen. Its “Fragrance Wheel” combines fragrance structure, top, middle, and base notes, with impressions labeled EDGY, SENSUAL, and NOBLE, offering a new experience of “choosing fragrance visually.” Users can intuitively select a scent suited to their emotions, the time of day, or the occasion. The system also suggests compatible scents for layering.

Creating Fragrances Around a Japanese Accord

One of SHEGREEN’s “Five Promises” is to “create fragrances centered on Japanese Accord, or Japanese harmony.” It also emphasizes transparency, complying with JFFMA, the Japan Fragrance and Flavor Materials Association, and IFRA, the International Fragrance Association, and clearly stating each product’s fragrance concentration, number of fragrance ingredients, and category. Its approach of carefully selecting both natural and synthetic fragrance materials and testing skin compatibility can be seen as a more pragmatic and honest step beyond the JMO-era claim of “100% naturally derived.”

Design Without Visual Noise

An “aesthetic of subtraction” also guides the packaging and bottle designs. The visuals were refreshed for the February 2026 grand launch under a concept described as “the presence of an objet that brings stillness to a space.” Going beyond the conventional role of a “container,” the brand says it pursues “noiseless design” that blends into contemporary living spaces.

The Ebisu flagship is likewise designed not simply as a retail space but as a “gallery-style experiential hub” where fragrance resonates with works by Japanese artists. The interior uses abundant natural materials, including DANTO tiles from Awaji Island, shaping time with enough “open space” to forget the bustle of the city.

If you want to try the fragrances in person, be mindful of the differences between locations. As of September 30, 2026, the Ebisu Gallery & Store operates strictly by appointment and offers fragrance-styling sessions with a dedicated advisor. There are also stockists throughout Japan, and the number of scents they carry varies by store. Before visiting, check the official store list and reservation information.

The Fragrance Lineup

Fragrance Collection: Twenty Scents

At SHEGREEN’s core is the collection of twenty fragrances introduced simultaneously at launch. As of September 30, 2026, tax-inclusive prices are ¥4,950 for 9 ml and ¥17,600 for 50 ml of Eau de Parfum, and ¥15,400 for 15 ml of Parfum. All are revised prices effective from August 1, 2026. Fragrance concentrations vary by creation: for example, Shinra Eau de Parfum is listed at 15%. When purchasing, check the size, price, and specifications on the page for your chosen scent.

The twenty scents encompass diverse facets, including woody, citrus, floral, marine, oriental, green, and musk, each accompanied by a poetic name and story. The full lineup is as follows.

The fragrance described as the most popular at the grand launch is Phantom, a smoky wood scent promoted as “shadow and light; an illusory woody fragrance where sweetness and spice intersect.” From a spicy opening of clove and cardamom, it moves through a heart of rose and orange blossom before sinking into a smoky trail of patchouli, sandalwood, vanilla, and amber. It is composed of 35 fragrance materials and finished as a parfum at a concentration of 25%.

The second most popular, Aurum, is a citrus fragrance whose name is Latin for “gold.” It develops from top notes of lemon, galbanum, and green notes through a heart of rose and orange blossom to a base of amber and cedarwood. It contains nineteen fragrance materials at a concentration of 20%.

The Stillness Ritual: A Line Exclusively for Hotels and Spas

Released in December 2025, this ritual collection is exclusively for hotels and spas. It is founded on a shift in thinking from “scented amenities” to “memorable rituals.”

The lineup has two scent families, Shinra and Kazane. Shinra is a woody fragrance embracing the stillness of the earth and its origins, themed around shinra banshō, “all things in the universe.” Kazane is a light, renewing earthy wood scent depicting the resonance between wind and roots. Products include shampoo, treatment, body wash, multipurpose oil, and multipurpose mist.

An advance introduction took place at VILLA AYIN, a luxury villa property on Ikema Island in the Miyako Islands, where a “delicate blend inspired by sea and forest” is provided in guest rooms.

Aromatic Mist: Ten Scents

This collection of room and fabric mists launched alongside the grand launch on February 14, 2026. Treating fragrance as a “switch for awareness,” the compositions are designed for three everyday moments.

  • For Focus: A switch for becoming alert before work or sports and entering creative immersion
  • For Release: Calm during bath time or before bed, and cooling down after yoga
  • For Switch: Refreshing the atmosphere at home, in hair salons, or in other salons

They are also designed for use on clothing and linens.

Future Developments

The brand announced plans to add around thirty SKUs in spring 2026, including eight hair oils in silky and moist versions and six fragrance hair mists, bringing the total to 78 SKUs. It says it aims to evolve into a lifestyle brand able to coordinate the scent of entire spaces, from private to public settings.

By the Way…

  • The “SHE” in the brand name does not mean a woman. According to the brand, it is “a quiet way of addressing the Earth and nature,” expressing respect for nature rather than gender.
  • The founder’s “next move.” Tracing Yoshimune Noda’s career reveals a path from introducing JMO to Japan in 2007 through the 2017 recall, a capital partnership with Permira and its subsequent unwinding, to building a fragrance brand from scratch. From hair care to fragrance, and then to an integration with spatial design and art: this leading figure in organic beauty next turned toward designing an entire lifestyle with scent as its starting point.
  • A brand born on Earth Day. SHEGREEN was incorporated on April 22, 2025, the same calendar date as the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. The choice of date condenses the respect for nature and philosophy of renewal embedded in its name.
  • “IRIP,” the AI perfumer. This is SHEGREEN’s proprietary AI fragrance-assessment system. Through dialogue with users, it analyzes emotions, mood, and environment to recommend suitable combinations of scents. Various assessments, including MBTI, recreate the experience of selecting fragrance intuitively.
