The Founders and the Brand’s Origins
Mario Prada: A Leather Kingdom Born in the Galleria
In 1913, Mario Prada and his younger brother Martino opened a leather-goods shop called Fratelli Prada, meaning “Prada Brothers,” in Milan’s celebrated Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. The shop is said to have stocked steamer trunks imported from Britain, handbags, travel accessories, jewelry, and other goods. Mario’s shop quickly became a favorite of Milan’s aristocracy and upper classes, and in 1919 it was granted the title of Official Supplier to the Italian Royal Household. This honor led to the incorporation of the House of Savoy’s coat of arms and knotted-rope motif into Prada’s logo. The crest still seen on Les Infusions bottles today carries on precisely this lineage.
Interestingly, Mario believed that women should not be involved in business. Ironically, however, his son showed no interest in the family enterprise, and it was eventually Mario’s daughter Luisa who took over Prada, running it for approximately twenty years.
Miuccia Prada: From Communist to Fashion Revolutionary
Luisa’s daughter, Maria Bianchi, later Miuccia Prada, was born in Milan on May 10, 1949. Adopted by her aunt in the 1980s, she began using the name Miuccia Prada.
Miuccia’s youth followed a path so unconventional that it is difficult to imagine from her image as a fashion luminary. She studied political science at the University of Milan, earning a degree in 1971 and a PhD in political science in 1978. During her university years, she was active as a member of the Italian Communist Party and participated enthusiastically in the feminist movement.
Even more striking is the fact that she trained in mime for approximately five years at Milan’s Piccolo Teatro. A Communist Party member with a doctorate in political science, and a mime artist: this unorthodox background can be seen as the foundation from which she would later infuse Prada with intellect, a rebellious spirit, and an awareness of the body.
Meeting Patrizio Bertelli: The Turning Point of 1977
In 1977, Miuccia met Patrizio Bertelli, who was already running his own leather-goods business in his twenties. Their meeting dramatically changed Prada’s fortunes. Bertelli advised Miuccia to move away from a reliance on imports from Britain and revamp the existing luggage line. In 1978, Miuccia formally took over the management of Prada. At the time, its sales were still only around $450,000.
Miuccia first turned her attention to Pocono, the military-grade nylon fabric her grandfather had used as a covering for steamer trunks, and began making waterproof backpacks. In 1985, her black nylon handbags became an “overnight sensation,” and in 1988 she presented a women’s ready-to-wear collection. By the 1990s, Prada had firmly established itself as a premium status symbol. Her marriage to Bertelli in 1987 cemented their partnership in both their professional and personal lives.
The Road to Perfume: An Olfactory Memory from the Age of Sixteen
Prada entered the perfume business in earnest in 2004, but the seeds had already been planted in Miuccia’s girlhood. In 2016, giving her first interview about Prada perfumes to AnOther Magazine, Miuccia shared a surprisingly personal story.
“I love perfume, I really love it. I can recognize quality in an instant. I drink wine, but I have never been able to understand it deeply. But perfume I understand immediately. It is something very instinctive. When I was about sixteen, a friend’s mother had an incredibly wonderful perfume. I became obsessed with it. I would go to her house and smell it in the bathroom. It was a perfume from a small workshop on Madison Avenue called Shelley Marks, which no longer exists.”
— Miuccia Prada
Her recollection of this “lost perfume” would later become the starting point for Prada’s first perfume, Prada Amber. Miuccia took fragments of that memory to a perfumer, described “what I remembered, what existed in my imagination,” and tried to recreate the scent in her memory.
“So the first perfume I tried to make was based on that perfume. I took a fragment of the bottle to the man, the perfumer, and told him what I remembered. I tried to translate the scent in my memory. And that actually became my first fragrance, Prada Amber.”
— Miuccia Prada
A Partnership with Puig, and the First Perfume (2003–2004)
In 2003, Prada formally entered the fragrance business through a 50:50 joint venture with the Spanish beauty and fashion group Puig. Puig described it as “the story of two Latin families devoted to tradition, quality, and attention to detail.”
The first perfume, Prada Eau de Parfum, commonly known as Prada Amber, was released in 2004 after three years of development. It was created by Carlos Benaïm (in Japanese), Clément Gavarry, and Max Gavarry of IFF, International Flavors & Fragrances. The square, plum-colored bottle had a silver atomizer and a steel plate engraved with the names of four principal ingredients: sandalwood oil, patchouli leaf, labdanum, and benzoin. This use of an ingredient-engraved metal plate would continue in later bottles as a design code expressing Prada’s characteristic intellect and restraint.
In August 2004, the fragrance initially launched at Neiman Marcus in New York, expanding to 350 points of sale in the United States in September. Its rollout then proceeded in stages through Europe and, in spring 2005, Asia.
Daniela Andrier: Prada’s “Nose”
Although the first perfume was created by an IFF team, since the men’s fragrance Prada Man in 2006, Prada’s world of fragrance has been entrusted almost entirely to a single perfumer: Daniela Andrier, a master perfumer at Givaudan.
Born in Heidelberg, Germany, Andrier studied philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris before turning to perfume. She interned at Chanel in 1988, then undertook formal training at the Roure Perfumery School, now the Givaudan Perfumery School. Her husband is Givaudan CEO Gilles Andrier. They truly are a “fragrance couple.”
Her work for Prada began with Prada Man in 2006 and continued through Infusion d’Iris in 2007, Prada Candy in 2011, Luna Rossa in 2012, L’Homme Prada and La Femme Prada in 2016, and all ten fragrances in the Olfactories collection. She has, in effect, created virtually all of Prada’s perfumes.
“I am an interpreter who understands the language of Prada and translates it into scent.”
— Daniela Andrier
In 2025, Andrier received the Lifetime Achievement Perfumer Award from The Fragrance Foundation USA, or TFF. In her acceptance speech, she said, “I am deeply passionate about creating fragrances. Receiving this prestigious award as a perfumer means a great deal to me.”
The Transition to L’Oréal (2019–2021)
In 2018, Prada decided not to renew its fragrance and beauty license with Puig. In December of the following year, 2019, Prada and L’Oréal signed a long-term licensing agreement. The creation, development, and distribution of fragrances and beauty products would now take place under the L’Oréal Luxe division.
Prada CEO Patrizio Bertelli said in a statement:
“L’Oréal is the world’s leading beauty company. Its position and experience make it the ideal partner for Prada to realize its full potential in new projects, draw on its established fragrance identity, and reach more people around the world.”
— Patrizio Bertelli
The transition to L’Oréal was completed on January 1, 2021, and in 2022 Prada Paradoxe was launched as the first major fragrance under L’Oréal’s stewardship.
The Brand’s Commitments
A Perfume Philosophy of “Instinct” and “Memory”
An essential point in understanding Prada’s approach to perfume is that Miuccia Prada sees scent as a product of instinct and memory.
“Perfume is not logical. That much is certain.”
— Miuccia Prada
“You cannot pretend to be in love, can you? Either you are or you are not. That is where the truth lies.”
— Miuccia Prada
For Miuccia, fashion allows one to “play at looking clever,” but perfume does not. Her conviction that “perfume forces you to be honest” gives Prada’s fragrances a consistent depth and sincerity.
Bottles and Packaging: Intellectual Minimalism
Prada’s perfume bottles consistently pursue minimalist, intellectual design. The original Prada Amber bottle paired rectangular, plum-colored glass with a steel plate engraved with the names of its main natural ingredients, an unusual presentation in the perfume industry.
The Les Infusions line uses pastel-colored labels and pistachio-green caps with a Saffiano-leather-like finish, while the bottles are engraved with a heritage crest dating back to Mario Prada’s era.
For Paradoxe in 2022, Prada’s most iconic code, the triangle, was incorporated into the bottle design. Its tilted yet firmly stable form creates a visual impression that is “feminine yet disruptive,” contrasting coral-pink liquid with a jet-black cap.
Sustainability: The Refillable Choice
Since partnering with L’Oréal, Prada has strengthened its sustainability initiatives in perfume. The Paradoxe, Paradigme, and Luna Rossa Ocean ranges are designed to be refillable. One 50 ml bottle of Paradoxe combined with one 100 ml refill is expected to reduce material use by 29% for glass, 67% for metal, 46% for plastic, and 39% for cardboard compared with purchasing three 50 ml bottles.
Fragrance Lineup
Prada’s fragrance portfolio is divided into several clearly defined collections. The following introduces representative lines.
The Prada Amber Series
The starting point of Prada’s perfumery, centered on the women’s Prada Eau de Parfum released in 2004 and the men’s Prada Amber Pour Homme released in 2006. The former is an amber Oriental built around sandalwood, patchouli, labdanum, and benzoin: a “translation of a lost perfume” based on Miuccia’s memories from the age of sixteen. The men’s version was created by Daniela Andrier and is known for the refined cleanliness of its soap and amber notes.
Les Infusions de Prada
Beginning with Infusion d’Iris in 2007, this collection can be regarded as a crystallization of Prada’s perfume philosophy. Daniela Andrier creates every fragrance, placing the traditional French perfumery technique of infusion at the heart of the concept.
The official website describes the line as follows: “Les Infusions de Prada are the essence of memory. Each evokes an ephemeral suggestion of a source, never a direct reference.”
Andrier has said that she took “the world of watercolor” and “a tattoo in water” as creative starting points for this collection. Each fragrance’s star ingredient is immersed in a base shared by all the compositions, called the “Spirit of Infusion,” like “water at the perfect temperature.” This is said to create an airy atmosphere that comes and goes, unfolding lightly.
In 2015, three new fragrances, Iris Cèdre, Amande, and Oeillet, joined Infusion d’Iris, Fleur d’Oranger, and Vétiver to form a permanent collection of six. It has continued to expand with later additions including Figue and Rhubarbe. Another distinctive feature is its unisex approach, free of fixed gender stereotypes. Andrier herself has said, “Gender-based products are very cliché-oriented.”
Prada Candy
Released in 2011, Candy is an especially pop-inflected, bold presence in Prada’s fragrance lineup. Created by Daniela Andrier, it contains benzoin from Laos at the unprecedented high concentration of 12%. Combined with a modern caramel accord and white musk, it becomes a sweet, addictive scent that nevertheless retains an intellectual quality. Together with its shocking-pink and gold packaging, it revealed a new side of Prada: “more is more,” or excess is everything. The box illustration is by François Berthoud.
Luna Rossa
This men’s fragrance line debuted in 2012. It was inspired by Luna Rossa, Italian for “red moon,” Prada’s team in the extreme sport of competitive sailing. Created by Daniela Andrier, it is distinguished by a refreshing, urban scent using lavender, bitter orange, sage, Ambroxan, and other notes. With successive variations including Luna Rossa Carbon in 2017 and Luna Rossa Ocean in 2021, it has grown into one of Prada’s principal men’s fragrance collections.
L’Homme Prada & La Femme Prada
Released in 2016, these paired fragrances express Prada’s “image of a man” and “image of a woman” through scent. Daniela Andrier created both. The landmark interview in which Miuccia first spoke publicly about perfume also accompanied this launch.
L’Homme Prada takes a classical fougère structure as its foundation while boldly incorporating iris and amber, traditionally regarded as feminine. La Femme Prada envelops rich florals such as frangipani and tuberose in modern musk. As time passes, the men’s and women’s scents draw closer to each other and finally come to smell alike. On this point, Miuccia has said, “There is no such thing as a masculine flower or a feminine flower.”
Prada Olfactories
A niche, selectively distributed collection of ten fragrances launched in 2015, all created by Daniela Andrier. The official description calls them “intense blends of the unexpected, evoking surreal, cinematic experiences like half-remembered dreams.” Their names, including Purple Rain, Tainted Love, and Pink Flamingos, are filled with allusions to film and music. Priced at $300 for 100 ml each, they were sold exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue and Prada’s own boutiques.
Prada Paradoxe & Prada Paradigme
A new generation of fragrances born under L’Oréal’s stewardship. Paradoxe, a women’s fragrance released in 2022, was created by Nadège Le Garlantezec, Shyamala Maisondieu, and Antoine Maisondieu under the direction of Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons. Its formula combines technology and sustainability, using ingredients such as the bio-based amber material Ambrofix and the newly developed musk molecule Serenolide. Emma Watson appeared in the campaign, and the film she wrote, narrated, and directed attracted considerable attention.
In 2025, its men’s counterpart, Paradigme, was released. Created by three perfumers, Marie Salamagne, Bruno Jovanovic, and Nicolas Bonneville, it is a fragrance in which amber-woody warmth intersects with the green freshness of Bourbon geranium.
Incidentally…
- Prada and film: Lauren Weisberger’s novel The Devil Wears Prada was published in 2003 and adapted into a film starring Meryl Streep in 2006. According to costume designer Patricia Field, “at least 40%” of the shoes Streep wore in the film were Prada.
- Daniela Andrier’s philosophical roots: Andrier, who has created almost all of Prada’s perfumes, studied philosophy at the Sorbonne before entering perfumery school. She describes her style as “avoiding every cliché and seeking the meeting of ‘the strangeness of déjà vu’ and ‘surprise.’”
- Prada and space: In 2024, Prada partnered with Axiom Space to help design AxEMU, the spacesuit to be used on NASA’s Artemis III mission. From leather goods to spacesuits, Prada’s “fusion of technology and craftsmanship” extends far beyond perfume.
