“I have always said that I have lived the life I was born to live. At some forgotten moment, an aromatic molecule entered me and changed me forever. My destiny was decided and my path was set. There was no path for me to follow other than perfume.”

ROJA is a fragrance brand established by the British perfume expert Roja Dove. It began under the name Roja Parfums, while its official website now carries the name ROJA London. Alongside its jewel-like bottles, at its heart lies a belief in scent’s power to evoke memories and emotions.
The Founder and the Origins of the Brand
His First Encounter with Scent: A Single Goodnight Kiss
Roja Dove was born in Sussex, southeastern England, in 1956. His formative experience of scent goes back to the memory of a night when he was about six. His mother, about to go out, came into his bedroom to kiss him goodnight. A gold lamé dress, carefully arranged hair, jewellery and perfume. The sight of his mother, backlit by the light from the hall, left a deep impression on the young boy.
“It was as though my mother had turned into an angel. I remember her scent, and that memory was etched in my mind. It was the first moment when I connected a particular moment and a person through their scent.”
Roja Dove
Even after his mother left the room, the scent remained. Looking back in later years, Roja described this as the first time he linked a smell with a person and a particular moment. Even when someone is no longer visible, scent holds the memory of them in that place. That mysterious power led him into the world of perfume.
Letters to Guerlain: When Curiosity Became a Career
At around fifteen, Roja saw an advertisement listing old perfumes and the years they had been created. He was surprised that fragrances born decades earlier still existed. Perfume was not simply a product for sale but something someone had created in a particular era. That realisation intensified his desire to learn about perfume history.
His repeated letters to the historic French house Guerlain were another expression of that curiosity. He says that he eventually received an opportunity to work there, accompanied by a joke to the effect that it would be better to bring him inside the company than have him keep asking questions from outside. Continually turning his desire to know into action opened the door to a career in perfume.
Around Twenty Years at Guerlain: The Man Called “Professor of Perfume”
In 1981, Roja joined Guerlain’s training and public-relations department. How could fragrance be understood, and its value communicated? As he learned about the brand’s history, creations and materials, he built his foundation as a perfume expert.
During his roughly twenty years at the house, he also became known as Professeur de Parfum, or “Professor of Perfume,” and is described as the first person outside the Guerlain family to serve as a global ambassador. His role was to share his profound knowledge of perfume with others.
“The title Professeur de Parfum was the finest title I was given, before anything any subsequent media outlet called me, because it means exactly the same thing as my lifelong career.”
Roja Dove
Leaving Guerlain in 2001 to become independent, Roja moved toward his own business. His recollection that his final day was Halloween conveys his determination to leave a large organisation and choose a path guided by his own sensibility.
A Place for Perfume on the Fifth Floor of Harrods
In 2004, he opened Roja Dove Haute Parfumerie at the London department store Harrods. It was on the fifth floor when it opened, later moving to the sixth-floor perfumery area.
Roja did not want to create a shop where perfumes were chosen solely for the fame of their names. He wanted a place where he could select scents he considered outstanding and introduce them together with their backgrounds and personalities. Surrounded by mirrors, glass and crystal, customers compare fragrances and gradually discover their own preferences.
“I opened the Haute Parfumerie at Harrods to celebrate all the beauty of perfume-making. Stepping inside is like wandering into an olfactory wonderland, a kind of sanctuary devoted to what I consider the most creative, original and luxurious creations in the world.”
Roja Dove
As he introduced other creators’ work, customers began asking for fragrances of Roja’s own. He had already begun making bespoke perfumes and early creations before launching a brand for the general public in 2011.
His Mother’s Death and the Words That Encouraged Him to Launch the Brand
Personal loss was deeply connected to the decision to establish the brand. After his mother died in 2009, Roja says a close friend strongly encouraged him over dinner to send his own creations into the world. He had spent many years protecting and introducing the work of others. Was it not time to direct that passion toward his own creative work? His friend’s words confronted him with that question.
“It is intensely personal. My mother died in 2009. I went out to dinner with a close friend. For two hours, she kept metaphorically slapping me across the face. She said, ‘You have spent your whole life promoting other people’s work. You have done nothing for yourself.’ I realised that she was right.”
Roja Dove
Roja Parfums launched at Harrods on July 2, 2011. According to his own interview, it was the day before his parents’ wedding anniversary. His love of fragrance, which began with memories of his mother, had taken the form of a brand bearing his own name.
He recalls that the inventory he had prepared sold out in only about ten days. The anecdote conveys that customers had been waiting for the knowledge and aesthetic judgement he had cultivated over many years.
“I remember looking at my life savings turned into boxes, bottles, tubes and pumps, and feeling as though I was going to be sick.”
Roja Dove
Bringing British Creativity to the World
In 2013, he was chosen as an ambassador for the GREAT Britain Campaign, which promotes British culture and creativity abroad. Roja speaks of the appointment as a great honour in his career. Having learned at a historic French house, he also wanted to bring British perfume-making to the world. That ambition, too, is at the root of the brand.
“Imagine it. On an ordinary working day, someone told me there was a call from 10 Downing Street. I picked up the phone and was told, ‘We would like you to come, and please bring your passport.’ As I approached that famous door, the door I had seen on television all my life, only one question kept repeating in my mind: do I ring the bell or knock?”

What Defines the Brand
Perfume as an Expression of Yourself
For Roja, perfume is “the most intimate accessory,” connected to the personality of the wearer. “Who you are, or who you want to be.” A bottle of perfume can express such feelings in a way different from words.
“Only the best will do (nothing but the finest is good enough).”
ROJA’s brand philosophy: Only the best will do
The breadth of the collection also connects with this thinking. Radiant flowers, deep woods, sweet lingering notes and classic chypres. Each answers different preferences and offers a different way for a person to encounter perfume. Rather than fitting everyone into a single trend, the brand values helping wearers find a fragrance that feels like themselves.
“Everyone deserves to smell wonderful. That is why the concept of Roja is based on a balanced palette of scents that caters to every taste and preference. When you find a fragrance that you connect with, it helps you become the best version of yourself. It makes you feel a little sexier, stand a little taller and believe that anything is possible. That is the magic of perfume that I wanted to put into the brand.”

Quality of Materials and the Imagination to Build a Fragrance
Commitment to ingredients is a theme Roja returns to repeatedly. Just as good cooking needs good ingredients, perfume requires materials of a quality that can support the intended expression. He describes layering the scents of rose and jasmine, woods and resins, and especially creating rich bases, as characteristic of his work.
He says the following words from his mother also underpin his attitude toward materials.
“Earn the things you want yourself; that way, you will learn the value of quality.”
Roja Dove’s mother, as recalled by Roja Dove
His creativity, however, is not limited to natural materials. In Sweetie Aoud, a pâtisserie accord reminiscent of a pastry shop is combined with the scent of oud. An accord is a unified scent built from several fragrance materials; it does not mean that a new chemical substance has been synthesised. Another of the brand’s attractions lies in giving classic materials a new expression through unexpected combinations.
Jewel-Like Bottles
Caps set with crystals, elegantly proportioned glass bottles and striking labels. ROJA perfumes convey their world of scent visually as well. The design considers the richness of the contents and the special feeling of holding the bottle as one.
The appearance of the container also changes with the collection and size. From an opulent creation to a bottle with a restrained presence, the outer form offers another way to sense the personality of the fragrance.
“Everything, from the box to the crystal cap to what is inside, is made exactly as I want it.”

The Fragrance Lineup
From early works exploring classical fragrance families to creations reflecting personal memories and a series reinterpreting oud. Following the representative scents reveals ROJA’s many-sided world.
The First Three Creations: Scandal, Unspoken and Enslaved
Scandal, Unspoken and Enslaved were already being introduced in a trade publication in 2007. The trio represented the classical floral, chypre and oriental fragrance families, one perfume for each.
- Scandal: A white floral scent centred on jasmine and tuberose. Its radiant flowers are supported by lingering notes of sandalwood, musk and other materials.
- Unspoken: A chypre built around oakmoss, layered with flowers, woods, patchouli and other notes. It combines a bright opening with calm depth.
- Enslaved: A rich oriental-style fragrance combining rose, jasmine, clove, patchouli and other notes.
Haute Luxe: An Expression of Personal Memory and Luxury
Roja Haute Luxe is known as a fragrance the founder conceived for himself. Warm notes such as labdanum express the sensation of being wrapped in soft cashmere.
Roja says the following about the gold leaf floating inside the bottle.
“The real gold leaf is the least precious of all the materials used in this fragrance. It is a little joke, and also an expression of my tendency not to take things too seriously.”
Roja Dove
Great Britain entrusts an impression of the country to scent. Roja explains that he chose a chypre expression based on images such as trees, the continuity of historic institutions and an aesthetic that avoids excessive ornament.
A Goodnight Kiss, released in 2015, is dedicated to the memory of his mother’s goodnight kiss. The scene that lay at the brand’s starting point returns in the form of a fragrance.
“I felt very anxious about releasing a fragrance based on unconditional love.”

Elysium: A Fragrance for Creating Your Own Paradise
Elysium is a series built around the image of paradise. Its concept associates the scent of cedarwood with strength and an independent personality. Beyond the impression of its striking bottles, part of its appeal lies in the story of wearers creating a world of their own.
Aoud: Giving Traditional Oud a New Expression
The Aoud Collection portrays oud from a variety of angles. Amber Aoud, Taif Aoud and Sweetie Aoud each layer different sweetness, flowers and resins.
Where Sweetie Aoud combines oud with a sweetness reminiscent of pastries, Espresso Aoud incorporates the aroma of coffee. These fragrances give a substantial material an approachable character recalling food and drink.
Parfum de la Nuit: The Sensuality of Night
Parfum de la Nuit takes night, seduction and the release of a usually hidden self as its themes. Built around the sensual impression of leather, it is presented as a fragrance that draws out a side different from one’s daytime self.
Diaghilev: A Chypre Paying Homage to Art
Diaghilev was created in 2010 to coincide with the Ballets Russes exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. It pays homage to Sergei Diaghilev, the impresario who changed the boundaries of art.
A bold, complex chypre in which elements recalling spices, fruit and leather overlap. The founder describes it as “the fragrance I would like to leave to posterity.”
“Being bold, baroque and breaking the rules: that is Diaghilev, and that is what the man himself was like.”

By the Way…
- The Name “Roja”: His real name is Roger Bird. A 2014 profile states that he chose the spelling “Roja” himself when he was eleven.
- A Book Sharing Perfume History: The Essence of Perfume traces the history and creations of perfumery. Alongside composing scents, communicating the culture of fragrance is also part of Roja’s work.
- A Collaboration with Whisky: For The Macallan Edition No. 3, he collaborated by putting whisky aromas into words and helping apply their characteristics to the final composition of the component whiskies. It is an example of the sense of smell connecting two worlds, perfume and whisky.
