The Founder and the Origins of the House
A Political Scientist and a Student of Mime
Miuccia Prada was born on May 10, 1949, in Milan, Italy. Born Maria Bianchi, she is the youngest granddaughter of Prada Group founder Mario Prada. The family business was a long-established maker of leather goods and bags favored by Milanese high society, but the young Miuccia resisted entering fashion until the very last.
Studying political science at the University of Milan, she was known from her student days as a committed feminist and was so deeply engaged in politics that she joined the Italian Communist Party. Around the time she received her doctorate in political science in 1978, she also spent five years studying mime at Milan’s prestigious Piccolo Teatro. Bodily movement, expression through silence, and the tension between “showing” and “concealing”: elements that would later shape her design philosophy reside here.
Miuccia later spoke candidly about how she felt at the time.
“I hated fashion. For me, as a feminist in the 1960s, being in the fashion industry was the worst choice imaginable. I struggled with it for years. It is only very recently that I have finally come to terms with it.”
— Miuccia Prada, from an interview with Newsweek
Encountering the Family Business and Meeting a Partner
In 1970, she became involved in managing one of the two remaining family-run Prada stores. By the time she took over the business from her mother, Luisa, in 1978, Prada had continued to shrink since its foundation and was down to a single shop.
During this period, an encounter transformed both her life and the business. At a trade fair, she met Patrizio Bertelli, a leather-goods manufacturer who was making and selling copies of Prada products. Ironically, their relationship began when Miuccia, impressed by the quality of those copies, approached him. Bertelli subsequently became her business partner and later her husband.
Together with Bertelli, Miuccia set the stagnant Prada business in motion. In 1985, she introduced a black bag made from military nylon fabric. It became a worldwide hit, transforming Prada into a brand associated with a new language of luxury: “luxurious materials × minimal design.”
The Birth of Miu Miu: For What Could Not Be Said at Prada
Although some accounts trace its beginnings to 1992, the official history dates its birth to 1993. Conceived by Miuccia from the platform of an established Prada, Miu Miu launched as an entirely new brand. Its name comes from her own childhood nickname.
The first collection took cowgirls as its theme, featuring fringed suede jackets and patchwork prairie skirts. In contrast to Prada’s precise, intellectual minimalism, Miu Miu was more playful, provocative, and charged with youthful energy.
Later, in an interview marking Miu Miu’s thirtieth anniversary in 2023, Miuccia Prada explained her intention.
“I thought I could be more radical, more avant-garde, more disruptive at Miu Miu. Anything I could not do at Prada, I wanted to do at Miu Miu.”
— Miuccia Prada, from an interview with W Magazine
Her description of Miu Miu’s creative process is equally memorable.
“The creative process at Miu Miu is completely different from Prada. It is more spontaneous than youthful. While Prada is sophisticated and considered, Miu Miu is more naïve. Solutions have to come immediately, instinctively, spontaneously, using whatever is there in the moment. If I think three times, I stop.”
— Miuccia Prada
The collections began in Milan but moved to Paris in 2006. Since then, Miu Miu has maintained a strong presence at the Paris shows.
The First Step into Fragrance
Miu Miu, which had offered only fashion, bags, and accessories, ventured into perfume in 2013, at least 20 years after the brand’s birth. In October that year, Prada Group announced a licensing agreement with American beauty giant Coty Inc. for the exclusive development, manufacture, and distribution of fragrances under the Miu Miu name.
Patrizio Bertelli, Prada Group’s chief executive officer at the time, said at the announcement:
“The agreement with Coty represents a major step forward in Miu Miu’s development plans. I am confident that combining Coty’s expertise with Miu Miu’s strong identity will lead to worldwide success.”
— Patrizio Bertelli, Prada Group CEO, from the 2013 press release
In August 2015, Miu Miu’s first fragrance finally arrived on store shelves around the world.
The House’s Commitments
The Perfumer as Translator: Daniela Andrier
Miu Miu’s fragrances during the Coty era were consistently created by Daniela Andrier, a perfumer at the Swiss fragrance company Givaudan. Born in Heidelberg, Germany, she entered the perfume world after studying philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris and has created fragrances for renowned houses including Bulgari, Bottega Veneta, and Martin Margiela. Her relationship with Prada Group began around 2003, developing into a near-exclusive partnership, unusual in perfumery, in which she composed many of the Miu Miu and Prada fragrances of that period.
In a fashion magazine interview, Andrier described working with Miuccia Prada:
“When I work with Miuccia Prada, there is mutual empathy and a very quiet exchange. Something connects.”
— Daniela Andrier
She has also said that their long collaboration helped shape who she is as a perfumer.
“The perfumer I am today has been profoundly nurtured by her vision of femininity: a vision of the relationship between modernity and tradition, the brutal and the beautiful, the precious and the fragile, the ugly and the elegant, of all these contradictions.”
— Daniela Andrier
Andrier defines her role this way: “I think of my work as that of a translator. Using the language of smell, I understand a brand and translate it into scent.”
She has been awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture and is also known for the story of her exceptional olfactory creativity despite having experienced chronic sinusitis.
The Bottle: Carrying the Memory of Matelassé into Fragrance
A consistent feature of Miu Miu’s fragrance bottles is their reference to the stitched, quilted pattern of the house’s iconic Matelassé bags. Matelassé refers to a quilt-like diamond-patterned stitching and is used as a signature design element on Miu Miu’s leather bags.
The first bottle, in 2015, combined opaque blue glass with a gold logo and a red cap, deliberately conceived as “anti-pink.” As contemporary fashion-magazine coverage of the concept explained, the woman envisioned by Miu Miu escapes the stereotypical “girlishness” of pink and contains far more contradictions.
Subsequent fragrances have shared the matelassé glass texture as a common language, expressing individual character through changes in color and cap materials. The turquoise blue of L’Eau Bleue, the pinkish bottle of L’Eau Rosée, the chestnut of Miutine: each bottle seems to reflect Miu Miu’s “mood of the day.”
A Fragrance Philosophy: Lily of the Valley as the Starting Point, Surprise as a Tool
An essential material in any discussion of Miu Miu fragrance is lily of the valley, also known as muguet. Embodying cleanliness and the freshness of spring, this white flower appears in many of the lines as the house’s “floral signature.”
What prevents Miu Miu fragrances from remaining simple florals, however, is the use of “unexpected materials” set against lily of the valley. The first fragrance used Akigalawood, a perfumery material developed by Givaudan through biotechnology from a fraction of patchouli essential oil. At the time, this new material was still little known; it combines a patchouli-like woody scent with peppery spice and the elegance of oud, or agarwood. “A fresh floral gradually transforms into something warm and woody,” as Andrier herself described it. That unfolding is precisely what reflects Miu Miu’s philosophy.
The Perfume Lineup
Miu Miu fragrance can broadly be divided into two phases: the Coty licensing era from 2015 to 2023 and the L’Oréal Luxe licensing era from 2024 onward.
The Coty Era: 2015–2023
Miu Miu Eau de Parfum (2015)
The house’s first fragrance. A floral opening of lily-of-the-valley accord with jasmine, rose, and green notes gives way to the earthy, woody & spicy trail of Akigalawood. Composed by Daniela Andrier and offered as an eau de parfum in 30 ml, 50 ml, and 100 ml sizes. Under L’Oréal in 2025, it was presented with a new appearance and name as Miu Miu L’Eau de Muguet.
Miu Miu L’Eau Bleue (2016–17)
A variation following the original’s direction while emphasizing transparency and a watery character through the addition of a violet-leaf accord and white musk. The turquoise-blue bottle is striking. Composed by Daniela Andrier.
Miu Miu L’Eau Rosée (2018)
A fruity floral in which rose, peony, and lily of the valley layer over blackcurrant top notes, with vanilla, sandalwood, and white musk forming the base. Composed by Daniela Andrier and Pierre Aulas.
Miu Miu Twist (2019)
From a refreshing entrance of bergamot and apple blossom, it moves toward a distinctive pink-amber accord and cedarwood. The launch emphasized the close collaboration between Miuccia Prada and Andrier, with Elle Fanning starring in the campaign.
Miu Miu Fleur de Lait (2023)
A limited-edition fragrance inspired by the Asian dessert mango pomelo sago. An ambitious creation combining mango, osmanthus, and coconut milk, replacing the usual lily-of-the-valley signature with osmanthus. Composed by Daniela Andrier.
The Move to L’Oréal Group: 2024 Onward
In February 2024, Prada Group and L’Oréal Luxe signed a long-term exclusive licensing agreement for Miu Miu Beauty. L’Oréal had already held the Prada fragrance license since 2021, and Miu Miu joined its portfolio. Benedetta Petruzzo, Miu Miu’s CEO at the time of the agreement, commented that “this new chapter will support the brand’s growth and fully unlock Miu Miu’s potential in beauty.”
Miu Miu L’Eau de Muguet (2025)
One of the first offerings under L’Oréal, introduced in 2025 as a continuation of the original 2015 creation. Retaining the framework of lily of the valley, green notes, and Akigalawood, it conveys the house’s characteristic freshness and woody depth. Its signature azure-blue bottle with a red cap is striking. Composed by Daniela Andrier.
Miu Miu Miutine (August 2025)
A fragrance symbolizing the “new chapter” under L’Oréal. The name “Miutine” means “little rebel” in French. It was composed by Dominique Ropion, opening new creative possibilities beyond Andrier, who had long played the central role.
At its heart, the fragrance boldly combines the structure of a chypre, a traditional fragrance family named after Cyprus and built around citrus, oakmoss, and woods, with a juicy gourmand, or sweet confectionery-like, element of wild strawberry of the Mara des Bois variety. Ropion described his idea as follows:
“I began with a classic and twisted it through surprising resonances, a harmony of mischievous freshness and lavish sensuality.”
— Dominique Ropion, master perfumer
The campaign starred Emma Corrin in a film directed by Hailey Gates. The bottle, designed in chestnut-colored matelassé glass with a sequin-shaped cap, updates Miu Miu’s design codes for the present day.
By the Way…
The “Anti-Pink” Aesthetic
The first fragrance’s bottle, in 2015, was opaque blue. This was a conscious choice. The description “designed as anti-pink” appeared in contemporary coverage, signaling a quiet rebellion against the industry convention equating women’s fragrance with pink. This, too, might be seen as a choice characteristic of Miuccia’s feminist sensibility.
A Perfumer Who Experienced Sinusitis
Daniela Andrier, who created Miu Miu’s scents for many years, actually experienced chronic sinusitis from around the age of 15. She later said her symptoms improved after treatment for allergies. Rather than allowing that experience to make her abandon her dream of perfumery, she demonstrated olfactory creativity among the finest in the world. Does this story not resonate, in some way, with Miuccia’s vision of “beauty within contradictions”?
Miuccia’s “Triangle”
Miuccia Prada once described her work this way: “My work flows between menswear, womenswear, and Miu Miu. Like a triangle. But fundamentally, I am trying to make men more sensitive and women stronger.” In fragrance, too, Miu Miu continues to be “one point of this triangle,” a space for experimentation distinct from Prada’s rigor.
