kai fragrance: White Flowers Born of Memories of Hawaii

白いガーデニアと海辺を背景にしたカイ フレグランスの香水ボトル

“Whenever I smell those flowers, I am instantly back on the island, surrounded by the people I love.”

— Gaye Straza (founder)

Sometimes the starting point for a perfume is not the self we want to show someone, but a place we want to return to. At the heart of kai fragrance are the founder’s memories of childhood summers in Hawaii and the white flowers she encountered there.

kai began in Malibu, California, in 1999. Following its story reveals, beyond the little perfume bottle, family holidays, a clothing boutique, and people brought together by a fragrance.

Essential Information

Founded: 1999
Founder: Gaye Straza
Place of origin: Malibu, California, USA
Official websites: kai fragrance / Official Japanese website

The brand name “kai” means “sea” in Hawaiian. Inspired by Hawaii, the brand grew up in Malibu.

The Founder and the Brand’s Beginnings

Summers in Hawaii and a Career in Television

For Straza, Hawaii was where her family spent the summer. Plumeria, pikake, gardenia, jasmine: the scents of flowers blooming everywhere became bound up with time spent among people close to her. Those holidays form the original landscape behind kai.

Before creating a perfume brand, however, she spent a period appearing on television. While working on commercials at San Diego broadcaster KFMB, she was approached by local television personality Larry Himmel. He invited her onto his new show, San Diego at Large.

Straza played a character in a comedy about life by the sea. There was constant laughter at work, and Himmel was both her boss and a friend willing to listen to her concerns.

“Those were the most enjoyable years I ever spent at work.”

— Gaye Straza

Later, Straza moved from Del Mar in San Diego to Malibu, where she began running a women’s fashion boutique. That shop was the first place where kai reached other people’s hands.

Making the Scent She Wanted to Wear, for Herself

Loving the scent of flowers did not mean that she could readily enjoy commercially available perfumes. Straza explains why she had avoided fragrances that did not suit her:

“I couldn’t wear ordinary perfume. It didn’t agree with me and gave me terrible headaches.”

— Gaye Straza

What she sought instead was a fragrance expressing the white flowers she loved. Working with a small fragrance company, she developed the scent that became kai.

The image behind it brought together not only childhood holidays but also her own wedding. Straza married in Hawaii and chose a bouquet of tropical flowers. What she wanted to recreate in scent was that bouquet and the feeling of being reminded of holidays, the beach, and warm weather.

Here is something characteristic of kai: it bears the name of the sea, yet places white flowers at its center. In her memories of Hawaii, the scent of flowers remained as vivid as the scenery.

From a New York Street to an Independent Brand

The turning point came on Madison Avenue in New York. Wearing kai as she walked along, Straza was stopped by a beauty editor who asked where she could buy the fragrance. In time, the scent went on sale at the Malibu boutique, and demand grew.

In 1999, Straza sold the boutique and launched kai as an independent company. A scent she had made for herself had caught the attention of visitors to her shop and become the center of her business.

The first product was a perfume oil. A story involving Angel, the Montecito boutique that became her first retail partner, conveys the enthusiasm of those early days.

Meeting the shop’s buyer at a New York trade show, Straza felt that it would be a good home for kai and asked the buyer to try stocking the oil. When the order came in, she delivered the products herself.

“I was so happy to receive that first order that I loaded the box of perfume oils into my car and drove it to Santa Barbara myself!”

— Gaye Straza

Many years later, she visited Angel as a customer and found kai products lined up behind the counter. The relationship that began with that first box had become part of the shop’s everyday scene.

Small Shops That Introduced People to the Scent

At the select shop Fred Segal, kai was placed beside clothing. Straza wanted people to happen upon the scent in the course of shopping.

Another connection was the specialist perfumery Luckyscent. Co-founder Franco Wright discovered kai in a women’s boutique in Los Angeles. He has said that, when he started Luckyscent in the fall of 2002, local independent brands including kai were part of his inspiration for a website devoted to perfume.

A perfume specialist took a fragrance encountered in a clothing shop and brought it to people farther afield. kai’s early history is also the story of small Los Angeles fragrance brands and the shops that stocked them growing together.

Expanding How a Scent Is Used Before Adding New Scents

From oil to spray: Straza also took time over delivering the same fragrance in another form. Developing the eau de parfum took three years, during which she explored how to incorporate the original fragrance oil while using high-quality alcohol that evaporated quickly.

Some people carry a little roll-on; others prefer to spray on their fragrance. With its original scent at the center, kai expanded into body care, hair care, and home fragrance.

This path suggests that releasing one different scent after another is not the only way a brand can grow. Making a favorite fragrance part of bathing, getting ready, and time spent at home is another relationship with scent that kai has cultivated.

Rose: A New Variation After Approximately 18 Years

The perfume oil for kai *rose, the second fragrance, appeared in April 2017. Approximately 18 years had passed since the brand was founded in 1999.

Straza loved the original and felt some uncertainty about which direction to take next. Advice from an experienced perfumer encouraged her: for the people who supported kai, why not introduce a variation while cherishing the original scent?

“Develop it. But keep the essence and the foundation. Then add to it.”

— Gaye Straza (recalling advice from a perfumer)

The resulting rose fragrance layered rose over kai’s white flowers. Rather than leaning on powderiness in this familiar flower, it brought out a fresh, green character. Maintaining a connection with the original was the starting point for the new scent.

At launch it was sold exclusively at Barneys New York for one month, before reaching the official website and other stockists on May 1 that year. Eau de parfum, body care, and candles would subsequently join the rose range.

What Matters to the Brand

Bringing White Flowers into Everyday Life

kai celebrates the beauty found in simple, pure things. At the heart of the scent is gardenia enveloped by other white flowers. Gardenia is the flower known in Japan as kuchinashi. The tropical flowers in the founder’s memory form the brand’s foundation.

Even with the addition of rose, the two scents are not intended to compete. They are also designed so that body care in one fragrance can be worn with perfume in the other. Layering scents allows different expressions within the same world.

Understated Containers and Ingredients Chosen for Each Product

The packaging uses muted green lettering, accompanied by the words “breath * life * flow”. The eau de parfum bottle pairs clear glass with a silver-colored cap, with the brand name placed discreetly on the front. It is a simple design that makes the most of the clear liquid and empty space.

The products are made in the United States, and the brand states a policy of no animal testing. The original perfume oil and eau de parfum are presented as vegan products, made without animal-derived ingredients.

In body care, the spray-on Body Glow contains jojoba seed oil and aloe vera, while the rose hand cream includes shea butter and sunflower oil. Translating the shared fragrance into oils, creams, and cleansers provides a choice of different textures and ways to use it.

The Perfume Lineup

kai’s perfumes center on two scents, original and rose, each available as perfume oil and eau de parfum. Choosing a scent direction first and the format you want to use second makes the range easier to understand.

kai: The White Flowers at the Brand’s Origin

The original opens out into white flowers around a gardenia center. Jasmine, lily, and white musk are also listed among its scent elements. Remembering time by the sea through the smell of flowers: the way the fragrance came into being is reflected in its composition.

The perfume oil presented in Japan is a 3.6 mL roll-on. Rolling the ball at the tip over the skin applies a small amount at a time, making it convenient to carry. The eau de parfum is a 50 mL spray.

kai Rose: Layering Rose over the Original Flowers

The rose fragrance layers rose absolute over the original white flowers. This is an aromatic material extracted from roses, and the perfume oil’s ingredient list includes damask rose absolute.

The aim is not a rose reminiscent of face powder, but a freshness that seems to include the greenery around the flower. In Japan, this fragrance is likewise presented as a 3.6 mL perfume oil and a 50 mL eau de parfum.

Extending to Bathing and Home Fragrance

There are also many products for bringing fragrance into everyday life, including body wash, lotion, body butter, and hand cream. The original range includes hair care and a diffuser as well. One characteristic of kai is that perfume alone does not capture the brand in its entirety.

In 2019, a hotel amenities collection was also announced with ADA International, a maker of hotel cosmetics. A scent born from memories of holidays had come to welcome people in bathrooms at their travel destinations.

An Aside…

Actor Richard E. Grant was one of kai’s wearers. Before founding his own perfume brand, he wore kai perfume oil. Grant, who loves gardenia, has said that people would ask what he was wearing and where they could buy it.

The anecdote somehow echoes Straza’s experience of being stopped on a New York street. A single fragrance made for one person finds its way into someone else’s memory. That intimate power of perfume lives within kai’s story.
