“Just as an aphorism must hold a truth within a few words, I pursued constructions unlike anything before. Drawing on my own journey and looking afresh at the great fragrance families, I created entirely new, resolutely modern olfactory expressions.”

The Founder and the Origins of the Brand
A Boy Born into a Fragrance-Industry Family
Dominique Ropion was born in Paris in 1955. His mother worked in human resources at Roure Bertrand Dupont, now Givaudan (in Japanese), and his grandfather had been the company’s finance director. He did not come from a line of perfumers, but the world of scent was close at hand from an early age.
“Ever since I was a child, I smelled everything. Even the smell of a handshake! I saw the world through smells, rather than through perfume.”
— Dominique Ropion
Among his earliest olfactory memories, he cites the smells of a French primary school: chalk, ink, paper glue, and guimauve, a marshmallow confection. The smell of the strawberry cake his grandmother baked is another indelible memory. A serious illness at the age of seven, which confined him to bed for a long period, was also a formative experience in his profound appreciation of the smells of the natural world.
From Physics to Perfumery: A Decisive Turning Point
As a teenager, Dominique was absorbed in physics and mathematics and hoped to become an engineer. After turning 16, however, he began spending his summer holidays working as an assistant at Roure’s laboratory in Argenteuil. Assigned to the chromatography, or component-analysis, and data-analysis team, he undertook painstaking work for three years. An intriguing episode from this period is that he also weighed fragrance materials as an assistant to the young Jacques Polge, then at Roure and later Chanel’s in-house perfumer.
The turning point came in 1978, when Dominique was 23. A place happened to become available at Roure’s perfumery school. Jean Amic, the company’s president at the time, encouraged Dominique, who was there as a trainee, to enroll.
“I was told that this profession was a journey of patience and learning. That suited me perfectly. I met Jean-Louis Sieuzac (in Japanese) and Pierre Bourdon (in Japanese), and everything was in place. I was naturally won over.”
— Dominique Ropion
Sieuzac and Bourdon were leading perfumers at Roure and would become Dominique’s mentors. He thus embarked on three years of intensive training at the company’s school in Grasse, the birthplace of the modern perfume industry.
The Impact of Ysatis: Triumph at 29
After completing the school’s program, Dominique joined Roure in Argenteuil as a junior perfumer and began gaining practical experience under Sieuzac. His first work involved fragrances for the home, hairsprays, and shampoos. He recalls: “There were many technical difficulties and only a limited range of materials to work with, but it was extremely educational and interesting. I even made a toilet cleaner based on a famous women’s perfume, and I was proud of it!”
He made his debut with Lace for Yardley in 1982. Then, in 1984, came an event that would define his life as a perfumer. On the recommendation of Roure’s president, Jean Amic, he was given the chance to present his ideas to Givenchy’s perfume division, despite still being scarcely more than an apprentice. His formula won the competition, was completed in just two weeks, and was released as Ysatis. Created when he was only 27, just his second perfume after his debut became a major hit.
“Every door in the world of perfume opened, and suddenly I was part of the elite!”
— Dominique Ropion
Roure, Florasynth, Dragoco, and Finally IFF
He spent a total of 12 years at Roure, creating masterpieces including Givenchy’s Amarige (1991). In 1988, Frédéric Malle (in Japanese) joined the company, and the two slowly developed what would become a lifelong friendship.
After leaving Roure, he followed his mentor Sieuzac to Florasynth, where he stayed for ten years. A notable creation of this period was Kenzo’s Jungle L’Éléphant (1996). After a brief spell at Dragoco, he joined the Paris operation of IFF, International Flavors & Fragrances, in 2000.
His creative work at IFF proved extraordinarily fruitful. Dior’s Pure Poison (2004), Vetiver Extraordinaire (2002) and Carnal Flower (2005) for Frédéric Malle, Viktor & Rolf’s Flowerbomb (2004), Thierry Mugler’s Alien, Calvin Klein’s Euphoria (2005), and Frédéric Malle’s Portrait of a Lady (2010): these masterpieces are deeply engraved in perfume history.
Frédéric Malle has said of Ropion:
“He is probably the most technically accomplished perfumer working today. He has the greatest knowledge of raw materials, and his technique is astonishing. […] Dominique is always open to new ideas, unlike some other leading perfumers.”
— Frédéric Malle
Honors and the Path to Master Perfumer
In 2008, he received the Cosmetic Valley International Fragrance Prize, formerly the Prix François Coty. In 2012, then French culture minister Frédéric Mitterrand awarded him the rank of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. He received the FiFi, or Fragrance Foundation, Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.
In 2018, he was awarded the title of Master Perfumer, which IFF had established in 2013. He was only the second recipient, after Carlos Benaïm. Nicknamed the “master of flowers” (Maître des fleurs), he has also been called “the Stanley Kubrick of perfumery” and “a philosopher of scent, the Aristotle of perfumers.”
Aphorismes d’un Parfumeur: The Book Behind the Name
Also in 2018, Dominique published Aphorismes d’un Parfumeur (A Perfumer’s Aphorisms), co-written with journalist Marie-Bénédicte Gauthier. With a preface by Frédéric Malle, the book traces his life and philosophy of perfumery across 15 chapters. It would later directly inspire the name of his brand.
The first edition had appeared in 2015 at Jovoy Paris, limited to 120 copies. It took the unusual form of a book-object: a rolled-up text enclosed in a flacon, or perfume bottle.
Meeting Habib Al-Soweidi: The Birth of Aphorismes
The idea for his own brand began with an encounter. Several years earlier, through his mentor Jean-Louis Sieuzac, he had met the Yemeni entrepreneur Habib Al-Soweidi. Habib was then involved with Al Jazeera Parfums, and the two immediately found common ground when he visited IFF.
They discussed the olfactory imagination of the Middle East, and Dominique created several fragrances for the Qatari brand. Habib subsequently launched Reine de Saba in 2022, with Dominique also contributing as a perfumer. Around the same time, Habib suggested: “Why don’t we create a collection bearing your own name?” In his characteristically understated manner, Dominique describes his response: “I wasn’t opposed to it…”
In an interview with Le Monde, he also said:
“My Yemeni friend, Habib Al-Soweidi, had been telling me for years that he would help me become independent. It was like a gift falling from the sky.”
— Dominique Ropion
And so, at the end of November 2024, APHORISMES BY DOMINIQUE ROPION was born alongside the opening of its boutique on rue Marbeuf in Paris.
The Brand’s Commitments
A Philosophy of Perfumery: “Making Perfume as a Free Man”
The thinking at the heart of Aphorismes is distilled in Ropion’s words:
“As a free man making perfume, I wanted to approach things differently.”
— Dominique Ropion
For at least 40 years, Ropion had answered briefs from distinguished brands such as Givenchy, Lancôme, Dior, and Frédéric Malle. Aphorismes was his first creative endeavor entirely free of commercial constraints. He conducted no consumer testing, reportedly asking only his family, people around Habib, and colleagues at IFF to try the fragrances. Le Monde described it as “Du pur travail d’artiste,” or “pure artistic work.”
Development took just under two years. Ropion describes it as “a process of freedom, but not without a framework,” suggesting that the coexistence of freedom and discipline is central to his nature. Each of the six perfumes was conceived as his reinterpretation of a great fragrance family, exploring classical territories such as rose, green floral, incense, tuberose, citrus, and oud.
LMR Naturals: Natural Fragrance Materials of the Highest Order
Natural ingredients from LMR Naturals, Laboratoire Monique Rémy, lie at the heart of Aphorismes. Founded in Grasse by Monique Rémy in 1983, the laboratory was acquired by IFF in 2000 and has since established itself as a leading supplier of natural fragrance materials. As an IFF Master Perfumer, Ropion says he was able to use these LMR ingredients “to my heart’s content.”
The initials LMR, which recur throughout the fragrances’ note listings, indicate high-quality natural extracts supplied by LMR Naturals. Bulgarian rose essence LMR, tuberose absolute LMR, orange blossom absolute LMR: in Ropion’s hands, these jewel-like natural materials come together with scientific precision and artistic daring.
Bottle Design: A Tribute to Serge Mansau
The flacon’s design is inspired by the work of the legendary French sculptor and perfume-bottle designer Serge Mansau (1930–2019). A master who designed bottles for at least 250 celebrated fragrances, including those of Hermès, Guerlain, and Kenzo, Mansau died in 2019.
The design itself was created by Mansau’s son, Jean-Michel Mansau, and his daughter-in-law (belle-fille), Sabine Muret, drawing inspiration from several of his sculptures. A powerful rectangular glass bottle is topped by a golden circular stopper made of zamak, a zinc alloy. Ropion describes it as “something like a totem: a circle resting on a monolith, with fissures seeming to emerge from it,” revealing that Arnaldo Pomodoro’s spherical sculptures were an inspiration.
The Boutique: A “Lynchian” Golden Space
The flagship boutique stands at 27 rue Marbeuf in Paris’s 8th arrondissement, near the Champs-Élysées. Designed by Sabine Muret, the interior is an exceptionally intimate space with gold-leaf-infused resin walls and niches illuminating each flacon. Ropion calls it “Lynchian,” evoking the world of film director David Lynch, and enjoys its intimacy: “Only a few customers can enter at a time.”
The Fragrance Lineup
The debut Aphorismes collection comprises six extraits, or highly concentrated perfumes. All are unisex and produced in limited quantities. Each reconstructs the essence of a different fragrance family in Ropion’s own way.
A Rose is a Rose
A rose oriental. Bitter orange, saffron, and pink pepper open the fragrance, leading to a lavish heart of three rose essences: Bulgarian, Turkish, and Isparta rose. Oud, vanilla, and ambergris lie deep in the base, where floral elegance meets animalic warmth.
Crazy Garden
A green floral. A citrus-green opening of lemon, mandarin, blackcurrant buds, and galbanum leads to a profusion of rose, jasmine, lily of the valley, and tuberose at the heart. Patchouli, oakmoss, and tonka bean support the structure from the base. Le Monde described it as “a surreal natural world where flowers and giant grasses intertwine, somewhere between a painting by Henri Rousseau and Charles Trenet’s ‘Le Jardin extraordinaire.’”
Encens Insensé
A tribute to incense. Spicy top notes of fresh ginger, pink pepper, and juniper berry move through a heart of Turkish rose and violet to a layered, resinous base of Virginia cedar, Cashmeran, and olibanum, or frankincense. The name is a play on the French words insensé, meaning “outrageous” or “unreasonable,” and encens, meaning “incense.”
Innocent Tuberose
A “deconstruction” of tuberose. Vivid top notes of mandarin, grapefruit, fresh ginger, cardamom, and pink pepper precede a floral heart of tuberose, sambac jasmine, and ylang-ylang, followed by a base of vetiver and cypriol. Having already created a tuberose masterpiece in Carnal Flower for Frédéric Malle, Ropion says he sought “a tuberose of entirely different colors” here.
My Clémentine
A citrus chypre. Lemon, sweet orange, mandarin, neroli, orange blossom, spearmint, and blackcurrant buds sparkle in the opening, moving through a heart of jasmine and violet to a base of patchouli, tree moss, and grey amber. Chypre depth lies beneath the lightness of citrus, in a composition that might be described as “citrus revealing its secrets to amber.”
Oud à l’Amour
A reinterpretation of oud, yet there is not a single drop of oud material in the formula. As Ropion himself puts it, “Oud without oud, Taif rose without Taif rose!” Top notes of pink pepper and pineapple, a heart of three roses and geranium, and a base of cypriol, patchouli, oakmoss, olibanum, and benzoin perform the remarkable feat of recreating the illusion of oud.
