Q. What is the best way to approach a customer for the first time?

A. This is only my personal opinion, so use it as a reference while finding the approach that works best for you. There is no single right answer, but I think it is best to adapt the conversation to the customer while paying attention to their reactions.

① First, greet them with a bright, lively “Welcome!”

② Next, observe the customer and tailor your approach to them.

  • If they seem to be looking for something specific → “Is there a particular perfume you have in mind or are looking for?” “Would you like me to introduce you to some fragrances?”
  • If they are casually browsing the perfumes → “Would you like to leave wearing a lovely fragrance today?” “If you have the time, shall we look for your perfect scent together?”

The key points are to work out “whether they are looking for a perfume or simply browsing,” to convey “Let us find a scent that is yours alone, together,” and, finally, to check “whether they have time.”

Just as you may have plenty to say about service when you are the customer, people receiving service are sensitive to even small choices of words or gestures. If you act as though helping them is a chore, they will notice; if you are nervous and hesitant, that will come across too. Professionalism means treating every customer with attentive courtesy, even when you are busy, without letting that show. Do not force assistance on someone who does not want it; for someone who does, offer service that opens up a new world. Once you are on the sales floor, customers can only see you as a professional. When you first started selling is irrelevant. Begin serving customers with confidence.
