Perfume is, above all, an art.
Julien Sprecher
Rearing horses, pink tassels and boldly coloured bottles give PARFUMS DE MARLY a visible connection to eighteenth-century France. Behind that world is Julien Sprecher, who moved from a family fragrance-distribution business to creating perfumes that express his own sensibility.

The founder and the beginnings of the maison
A childhood surrounded by perfume and a family distribution business
Born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, west of Paris, Sprecher grew up with fragrances from many brands at home, learning to recognise ingredients and olfactory families. His father worked with Guerlain in the Middle East; Sprecher subsequently gained experience in the family distribution company across Asia and the Middle East.
Smell was personal as well as professional. Orange blossom, one of his favourite materials, recalls childhood cakes. Knowledge of finished perfumes grew alongside memories of everyday scents.
After years working with other brands, the turning point was deciding to create his own.
I felt it was time to express myself through my own creations.
Julien Sprecher
Founding the house in 2009 and drawing on Marly’s history
For the maison he founded in 2009, Sprecher chose a name connected to the history of Marly, near his birthplace. Its eighteenth-century world had long fascinated him, bringing together his interests in perfume and history. The maison launched in the Arabian Peninsula in November 2009, reaching Italy and Germany the following year.
The maison draws on Marly as a place where the king and his close circle could leave Versailles’ strict etiquette behind. Freedom and celebration supply a framework for contemporary creation, giving the historical setting a personal meaning.
Sprecher also wanted to contribute something individual to perfumery as it became increasingly standardized. The colour and opulence of his bottles deliberately took a different direction from the minimalism prevalent in niche fragrance.
Defining a fragrance through dialogue with perfumers
As Artistic Director, Sprecher chooses perfumers according to each project’s direction. He values the initial brief and the exchanges that turn an idea into successive trials; development can take up to two years.
Discussing Kalan in 2019, he wanted a rounded composition with a clearly defined opening and base, its materials and accords working in harmony. The collaboration addresses the shape of a perfume as well as its imagery.
You can love classic perfumery while being modern.

Historical inspiration is developed through the materials and expertise available to perfumers today.
From masculine fragrances to Delina and further growth
The house initially became known for masculine fragrances such as Pegasus and Layton, then broadened its feminine work. Delina, launched in 2017, became a milestone. Its rose-centred world later developed into Exclusif and La Rosée, exploring the same flower in different atmospheres.
In 2023, an agreement for Advent International to acquire a majority stake in the group was announced to support international growth and distribution. Sprecher would remain a shareholder, Executive Chairman and Creative Director. Since 2024, the maison has also supported restoration in the Louvre’s Decorative Arts department, including the Cressent rooms and furniture. Its interest in the eighteenth century extends into preserving the period’s craftsmanship.
The brand’s approach
Building Delina’s rose with natural materials and modern perfumery
Perfumer Quentin Bisch created Delina. The initial proposal was reconsidered after the perfumery team pressed its case, then developed with a single requested modification. The fragrance emerged through both artistic direction and the perfumer’s commitment to his idea.
Bisch paired natural Turkish rose with Givaudan’s Petalia to sustain a fresh, lychee-like rosiness throughout. The current official composition also places lychee and rhubarb around Damascena rose, with musks and cashmeran in its trail.
The related fragrances change the surrounding light and moisture. Delina Exclusif (2018) moves the garden into night; Delina La Rosée (2021) imagines a dewy morning before the flower has fully opened. Of La Rosée, Bisch says:
It’s transparent but still powerful.
Quentin Bisch
Freshness and presence become connected design choices. The maison’s current approach likewise brings natural materials together with molecules chosen to reveal their facets and expand the scent’s diffusion.
Balancing warmth and freshness in Althaïr’s vanilla
Vanilla, one of Sprecher’s favourite ingredients, takes centre stage in Althaïr, launched in 2023. His intended direction was clear:
Althaïr explores a majestic, subtle and surprisingly fresh vanilla.
Julien Sprecher
Hamid Merati-Kashani and Ilias Ermenidis worked with him on the fragrance. The brief called for a pronounced contrast between warm ingredients and freshness, combining traditional perfumery notes with modern molecules.
Bourbon vanilla meets citrus, orange blossom, spices and woods. Brightness and lightness are part of how the composition gives its central material expression.
Horse emblems and bottles with colour and ornament
Sprecher’s interest in horses also entered the fragrance names. The two horses in the logo draw on Guillaume Coustou’s Chevaux de Marly, sculptures originally made for Marly’s gardens and now held at the Louvre.
Althaïr’s brown bottle carries the emblem in relief; Delina combines curved ornament with pink tassels. Their different forms communicate a shared decorative world before the perfume is sprayed, extending the founder’s interest in the eighteenth century into the object itself.
