“Entropy is a universal law at the heart of my creativity. I deliberately introduce imbalance to generate dynamics. Harmony emerges from the intentional tension between unexpected contrasts and the power of scent.”

The Founder and the Origins of the House
A Boy from Nancy Sets Out for Grasse
Bertrand Duchaufour was born in Nancy, a city in northeastern France. He is said to have been highly sensitive to art and beauty from childhood, but he encountered the profession of perfumer at 16, after moving to Paris. A woman he met there had a deep passion for perfume. “She came from a wealthy family and had an unusually large perfume collection for a teenager,” Duchaufour himself recalled in a later interview. That encounter determined the direction of his life.
Aspiring to become a perfumer, Duchaufour headed for Grasse, the spiritual home of the French perfume industry, while continuing to cultivate his interest in art and aesthetics. He trained at the Lautier Florasynth group’s perfumery school in Grasse and began his career in 1985. He subsequently worked for around ten years in the fragrance divisions of Créations Aromatiques and then Symrise, continually refining his technical skills and aesthetic sensibility.
A Hunger for Independence and the Era of a Personal Signature
During his time at Symrise, Duchaufour already felt a deep unease with established industry practices. “I have always tried to work for myself rather than for the company. So things did not always go smoothly. When I was asked to make something that did not interest me, I could not work in the way they wanted.” After these struggles, he chose the path of an independent freelance perfumer in 2008, by agreement with Symrise.
One turning point in work that began before his independence was meeting Christian Astuguevieille, artistic director of Comme des Garçons. “Without him, I would not have embarked on that kind of challenge. At the time, he was the only person who dared to use materials like those,” he has said. Creations from this period, including Avignon in the Comme des Garçons Incense series, established his international reputation.
His collaboration with L’Artisan Parfumeur produced masterpieces that entered the history of modern niche perfumery, including Timbuktu (2004) and Dzongkha (2006). For Amouage, he created the sumptuous oriental Jubilation XXV (2007); for Penhaligon’s, Sartorial, which captures the atmosphere of a London tailor’s workshop. His total output is said to reach at least 200 creations, and he has even been called “the new pope of niche perfumery.”
A “Personal Manifesto” after Forty Years: The Birth of L’Entropiste
L’Entropiste, launched by Duchaufour in 2025, is the culmination of a career spanning at least 40 years. The brand name means “one who creates chaos” in French and takes its inspiration from entropy, the physical quantity describing the degree of disorder in a system.
Duchaufour spoke candidly about his reasons for establishing the house in an interview with Premium Beauty News.
“The niche perfume market is already saturated, and standing out is difficult. The boundary between selective and niche perfumery is also becoming less distinct every year. That is precisely why I wanted to create a brand with a bold stance, both conceptually and olfactorily. To depart from the norm. It is a way to elevate the discussion and take a more dreamlike view of creativity.”
The house is not the work of Duchaufour alone but was established in partnership with business co-founder Kris Fang. Saying that “contemporary luxury is based not on excessive quantity but on precision; what matters is creating something rare and lasting rather than volume,” Fang led the house’s high-end positioning and philosophy of selective distribution.
The full development of its identity, including bottle design, visual identity, and brand strategy, was entrusted to the design and branding agency Centdegrés.
Opening the Flagship Boutique
In February 2025, a flagship boutique of approximately 75 m² opened at 59 Rue des Francs-Bourgeois in the Marais, at the heart of Paris. Designed in collaboration with British architecture practice Fairerol, the space is more than a shop: it is also a perfumery laboratory, art gallery, and Duchaufour’s studio. Objects of African and Japanese art collected during at least 30 years of travel are displayed alongside his own paintings, creating a space where perfume and the visual arts intersect. A bottle-refill service is also offered, giving tangible form to the house’s commitment to sustainability.
The House’s Commitments
Entropy as a Philosophy
“Entropy” is a concept in thermodynamics expressing the tendency of an isolated system to move gradually toward disorder and chaos. Duchaufour placed it at the heart of the house because it embodies his philosophy of life. “That is how life progresses: by unbalancing itself and creating danger, it evolves. Order is born from chaos. Light can exist only when surrounded by darkness.” His creative principle is to introduce tension and contrast into a fragrance deliberately, ultimately arriving at a deeper harmony.
Niche perfumery is often described as aspiring to “refined harmony,” but L’Entropiste directly challenges that assumption. Throughout his experience creating fragrances for numerous fragrance companies and major brands, Duchaufour has consistently maintained that he “does not consider trends at all.” L’Entropiste can be seen as the house that embodies this philosophy in its purest form.
Bottles and Packaging
The bottle was designed by Centdegrés and manufactured by Verescence. Its most striking feature is its asymmetric, off-center form, with deliberately sloping shoulders. It gives visual and tactile expression to the philosophy of “imbalance.” Centdegrés conceived it as a “totem object,” embodying “disruptive lines and a balance between raw intensity and refinement.” Made from glass containing 20% post-consumer recycled material, it is finished with a smooth metal collar. The secondary outer packaging uses recycled bamboo pulp, incorporating environmental considerations throughout.
The boutique’s interior is unified by three colors: red, black, and white. In Duchaufour’s own interpretation, “black symbolizes the earth, white the world of spirits and the dead, and red life.” It is an attempt to express the cycle of life itself through space.
A Commitment to Materials and “Made in France”
L’Entropiste adopts incense as the leitmotif of its entire founding collection. Duchaufour has used this material so devotedly throughout his life that he is called the “god of incense.” Incense is also especially popular in Asian markets, particularly China, making it a strategic choice with international expansion in mind. Combining natural materials with synthetic notes, he takes an approach that “creates something new while giving it structure” and “pursued direct, evolving, rich, contrasting combinations.” All manufacturing takes place in France, in a thorough commitment to the “Made in France” label.
The Perfume Collection
Six unisex eaux de parfum were released simultaneously when the house was founded in 2025. A seventh, Ensang Noir, followed in autumn 2025. Prices quoted in European coverage in 2025 were €210 for 50 ml, €295 for 100 ml, and €54 for the discovery set of six 2 ml samples. At the Japanese launch in December 2025, the price was ¥39,600, including tax, for 50 ml.
The Founding Collection: Six Fragrances
Altamura
A cosmic, mysterious, evolving amber fragrance. It is accompanied by text saying, “Feel the endless dance of atoms, stars, snowflakes, and dust in an attic.” Beginning with sparkling top notes of sweet orange and alcohol, it passes through a Cointreau-like amber transparency before transforming into a nebula of incense spreading through the cosmic void.
Blanc Sada
A sensual, powdery fragrance of delicate Eastern aesthetics. The house describes it poetically: “The tartness of lychee on her tongue. Her body, shamelessly dusted with white powder, lying directly on the tatami.” Lychee, rice powder, iris, and a tatami accord intertwine.
Dawn Whispers
An ethereal, meditative fragrance that seems to transcend time and space. It opens with cold ozonic notes, gradually shifting toward the warm white of milky musk and amber. The metaphor of the self, “I am Orion, always searching for the past and the future,” shapes its imaginative world.
Dorian’s Spleen
A fragrance of decadence, melancholy, and gourmand darkness. Caramel, coffee, and dark chocolate entwine with the aroma of whisky, ultimately sinking into a base of ash and smoke. Inspired by Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, it is a fragrance of aesthetic dandyism.
Jodhpur 6am
An exotic fragrance expressing India before dawn, born from the travel memory “Jodhpur awakens, and all of India resonates through my senses.” Ginger, cardamom, chai, the creaminess of tuberose, and accords of black tea and warm milk overlap.
Semence Douce
Inspired by a photograph of a sensuously curving tulip taken by Robert Mapplethorpe. It embodies the themes of life’s cycles and the fleeting nature of beauty in the image “a tulip bends, revealing its suggestive movement.” The warmth of almond milk and rare saffron mingles with the green vitality of tulip.
The Seventh Fragrance: Autumn 2025
Ensang Noir
The seventh creation, released in autumn 2025, is a unisex floral chypre. Its poetic concept describes “an unfinished letter lying on an old desk, stained with black ink and still-wet red. Was it a cry of love, or a hastily written testament? No one knows.” It begins with a cold breath of aldehydes, followed by the green tartness of blackcurrant, coriander, and cucumber, a floral heart of red rose, magnolia, and peony, and a base of incense, birch smoke, opoponax, patchouli, and vetiver, into which caramel finally melts.
By the Way…
Beyond his work as a perfumer, Duchaufour is also a painter and art collector. He paints alongside creating fragrances, and his love of the visual arts has continued throughout his life. The Paris boutique displays his collection of African and Japanese art, gathered over at least 30 years of travel, together with his own paintings. He has also practiced tai chi for 18 years and says that “justesse du geste,” or precision of movement, lies at the heart of his fragrance-making aesthetic.
Reporting in November 2025 described L’Entropiste as having achieved distribution at 130 locations in 23 countries within around eight months of its establishment. Its arrival in Japan began with a preview in October 2025, where it ranked as the most popular of the 27 brands NOSE SHOP presented at the event. Full-scale distribution began on December 12, rapidly increasing its presence in the Japanese market.
The boutique also regularly organizes cultural events that extend beyond perfume, including a treasure hunt centered on a “black diamond” and collaborations with jewelry artist Elke Berr.
