QNOWA approaches incense through the hours of a day, the history of fragrance and the time held within aromatic woods. Imagining a setting, opening a package and lighting a stick connect Gyokushodo’s incense-making to everyday experience.

How the brand began
A second brand from Gyokushodo
Incense manufacturer Gyokushodo launched QNOWA in 2024. While its earlier ICHIKŌ ICHIE brand provides an introduction to incense, QNOWA aims to explore ingredients, manufacturing methods and cultural background in greater depth. Its KITTE Osaka store opened on July 31 that year.
Store fixtures draw on the boards used to dry incense, while lighting refers to the factory’s lattice windows, known as bekako. Objects from the manufacturing environment become part of the space in which visitors choose a fragrance.
A name and a collaborative design team
The name derives from the Japanese characters 久ノ環. Involved from the planning stage, balance worked across the concept, name, product range, packaging and store design.
The project credits name 島田智之 as creative director, 島田智之 and 山野里奈 as art directors, and YLANG YLANG for the store architecture. The brand combines a manufacturer’s incense-making with the work of giving an experience a visible form.
How QNOWA explores its theme
Different measures of time in Moments and Inspired
Moments develops fragrances around scenes associated with particular hours. A name such as 16:00 茜色の珈琲, evoking coffee and the red tones of late afternoon, invites the customer to imagine a moment before lighting the incense.
Inspired instead draws on Gyokushodo’s inherited formulations and their development. Product names use the year in which the underlying fragrance originated or was introduced. Moments considers part of a day; Inspired follows fragrances across generations. The same theme can be approached on different scales.
Aromatic wood in Eternal
For Eternal’s Kyara, the brand describes a powder made from green-oil kyara encountered by Gyokushodo in the 1980s as constituting 100 percent of the aromatic ingredients. The focus moves away from the daily clock towards the history of the wood itself.
A roof-tile motif becomes an incense holder
The original holder takes its form from Japanese roof tiles. It was developed through prototypes and colour trials with a kiln operating for more than 120 years in the Tono area of Gifu, a centre of Mino ware.
The connection to tradition appears in an object used by hand, not only in an explanation. The brand’s subject extends to the things surrounding the act of burning incense.
Workshops beginning with the raw materials
An official announcement dated September 20, 2026, advertised incense-making workshops from October that year. The described process lets participants choose and blend ingredients, knead the mixture, roll and cut it, then take it home to dry.
Following those steps offers a way to understand the time involved in making a stick, beyond selecting a finished product. QNOWA’s theme extends from product names into a hands-on experience of production.
