Estéban is a French brand concerned with the materials and objects that carry fragrance. Ceramics, wax and reeds that draw up scented liquid offer different ways to bring scent into a room. The brand has developed products around those differences in use and placement.

The founder and the beginnings of the brand
Small objects that hold scent
In the brand’s account, Jean-Max developed scented decorative objects after meeting a young artist who loved perfume. Its official history identifies microporous ceramics capable of retaining fragrance as a technology present at the company’s founding in 1980.
Japan became its first export market in 1985, beginning a collaboration with Nippon Kodo. Cèdre followed in 1990, and its first Paris shop opened in 1995. The business expanded from small scented objects into collections and retail spaces.
New materials and ways to refill
The official timeline records vegetable-wax candles in 2000, candle refills in 2005 and reed diffusers in 2006. Its entry for the Lavérune facility in 2018 describes a production base making more than 90 percent of its products.
Alongside fragrance itself, the design question became what to retain and what to replace once a product had been used.
How the brand works
Replaceable scented ceramics for the car
The Cèdre car diffuser uses ceramic scented in a French workshop. The device attaches to an air vent; when the fragrance fades, the ceramic can be replaced.
It combines a fragrance-holding material with a fitting that places it in moving air. This adapts the early idea of the scented object to a particular setting rather than simply putting a room fragrance in a smaller container.
Woods and spices in Cèdre
For the 100 ml Cèdre reed diffuser, the listed top notes are grapefruit and nutmeg, followed by cedar, clove and patchouli, with sandalwood, balsams and vanilla at the base. Citrus and spice are arranged around the woody theme.
Reeds draw up the scented liquid and release fragrance without a flame. Both the liquid and reeds can be replenished, allowing the vessel to be used again. The product can therefore be considered through its method of renewal as well as its scent description.
One collection in different settings
The official Cèdre collection includes reed diffusers, candles, car diffusers and refills. A fragrance name moves between different settings, from a tabletop to a room or car.
Each format releases scent differently. Part of the interest in Estéban lies in the choice of material carrying the fragrance, rather than in the notes alone.
A history that also includes personal fragrance
One personal fragrance recalled by the brand is Folie de figue, introduced in 2006. Its current guide to former collections states that its earlier eaux de toilette and eaux de parfum have been discontinued.
Home fragrance and the objects that carry it now form the focus when exploring its products. From the original ceramics to reusable containers and replaceable components, the relationship between scent and object remains central.
