Book Review
The authors are Sabine Chabbert, a perfume-industry journalist who was then executive director of the Fragrance Foundation France, and Laurence Férat, an executive board member of the French Society of Perfumers. The book was produced with the full support and supervision of the Osmothèque, the world’s first fragrance archive. Nicolaï (in Japanese), the Osmothèque’s director at the time, appears right from the foreword.
This slightly oversized book introduces now-famous perfume houses and specialist perfume shops regarded as pioneers of the so-called niche brands, with color photographs and well-organized writing. It gives you an efficient, easy-to-understand introduction to the brands, their backgrounds and their founders. It also presents specialist perfume retailers around the world, which may offer a glimpse into a new world. If it were rewritten roughly once every five years, it could become the perfect book; even allowing for that, it is a beautiful volume I would want every household to own.
